USC Football Recruiting: Trojans Get Verbal From Big DE, but Are More To Follow?

Rick McMahanNov 8, 2010

With the Trojan's beleaguered defense continually being challenged on a weekly basis, there appears to be help on the way.

Steve Dillon, a 6'3", 260 lb. defensive end from Palmdale, CA., attended last night's USC game against ASU and was so moved by the experience that he gave Ed Orgeron his verbal commitment when he woke up this morning.

Dillon, rated a three-star prospect by Scout.com, had nine sacks last year as a junior and is following that up with a big 2010 season.

In Dillon, the Trojans get a big, athletic end who will benefit from the tutelage of defensive line coach, Orgeron.

Dillon had previously given his verbal commitment to Utah but a desire to play closer to home proved to be too enticing for Dillon who said he is looking forward to playing in front of family and friends.

Meanwhile, there may be more defensive assistance on the way in addition to Steve Dillon.

LaTeek Townsend, the incredibly athletic, though undersized linebacker from South Carolina, recently made a visit to USC and liked what he saw.

Townsend, who had 14 sacks and 11 interceptions as a junior last year, is fast and has a nose for the ball.

Although Townsend enjoyed his trip out west, South Carolina remains a narrow leader for his services.

Also, another defensive end has included the Trojans in his list of final suitors.

Koa Ka'ai, a four-star prospect as rated by Scout.com, includes USC among five or six other programs that have offered.

In Ka'ai, the lucky program that wins his services will get a big D-end who has a motor that never stops.

Now that the prep football season is drawing to an end, look for more high school players to either commit or narrow down choices as the February 2 letter of intent signing day draws near.

If the Trojans can land a couple more big defensive players it will help in terms of depth and who knows, maybe they can even contend for playing time.

And that would put a smile on Papa Kiffin's face for sure.
