Liverpool Beat Chelsea 2-0: Fernando Torres, Reds Back to Best?

Yoosof FarahNov 7, 2010

The Red resurgence continues at Anfield following Liverpool's 2-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday.

Fernando Torres hit the headlines for the right reasons with two crucial, well-taken and morale-boosting goals for the hosts, as the entire Liverpool lineup put in impressive performances.

The result comes as a welcome boost for all involved with Liverpool FC.

New owners NESV (New England Sports Ventures), and specifically principal owner John W. Henry, will undoubtedly be pleased to see one of their biggest investments show signs of paying significant dividends.

A very important win against the current Premier League leaders, with the club's record signing stealing the show with both goals, does nothing but improve the worldwide image of the famous team in red again.

Spain striker Torres will be delighted with the contribution he made to his team's win; a potential turning point in his personal season, which gives not only the fans and media, but also himself, a strong reminder of just what he's able to achieve.

After injury troubles and poor form, the two goals give the World Cup winner the psychological boost he desperately needs, if he's to start matching the success of his rivals for the top individual and team honours.

Psychology effectively influences 50 percent of an athlete's performance, according to research studies. If Torres hadn't scored today, his team might not have, and the result and future outlook could've perhaps been somewhat different for the striker and his colleagues.

But Fernando Torres did score, meaning there's one man who has barely got a mention (which is a good thing).

Reds manager Roy Hodgson has been under increasing scrutiny over his job in recent weeks, after a string of poor, unexpected results that left Liverpool in an unusually low, very unfavourable and unglamourous position in the Premier League.

However, after Sunday's 2-0 win, Hodgson's future as 'Pool manager has hardly received any airtime, whilst his team's "shocking start to the season" could be viewed as turning into something of a "glorious crisis," considering the Anfield club is now five points off third-placed Arsenal, sitting ninth in the table and level on points with UEFA Champions League side Tottenham Hotspur

Suddenly, the future outlook is becoming increasingly positive for Liverpool Football Club.

The subject of the manager's future is receiving less attention, the goal-scoring exploits of Fernando Torres are gaining increasing popularity ("is he the best striker in the world again?" ask some fans), and most importantly, the team is currently on a four-match winning streak, and five-match unbeaten run.

The result also throws into doubt who will be named 2010-11 Premier League champions.

Whilst Chelsea remain top, Manchester United are now just two points behind and remain unbeaten this season, having already won against the Blues, as well as Tottenham, Liverpool and teams like Valencia in European competition.

Arsenal and Manchester City are five points behind, but the Sky Blues have already beaten Chelsea this season, while the Gunners beat City convincingly at Eastlands and have a home goalscoring record which has only been topped by the current league leaders.

Despite the loss, statistics and past results indicate Chelsea might perhaps remain favourites to retain their title.

However, the idiosyncrasies of Premier League football have been in full flow again this weekend, with the 2-0 Liverpool win going against general public, pundits and bookmakers opinions, as well as Newcastle United's 1-0 victory away at Arsenal.

Therefore, to claim Chelsea are indeed title favourites could actually be something of a bold statement to make, and thus shows how Sunday's result again makes the predictable in football unpredictable.

After all, following the game at Anfield, not many around the world can truly say, "Liverpool to beat Chelsea 2-0? Fernando Torres to get both goals? I definitely saw that coming."
