Auburn Football: Cam Newton and the NCAA
So here it comes. The news has broken and it looks as if the whispers over the summer have come into the light as black and white on the virtual pages of ESPN.com. What does this all mean for Auburn and for the 9-0 record? What does this mean for Cam Newton and his future?
After reading the article, surprise should not be the response. The whispers that Cam Newton had reasons to go to this school over that school this summer were rampant. Eventually they went away. But here they are again.
What is the first response? The first response from Auburn is that he is eligible. The article states the following response: "We have been made aware of the allegation. Unfortunately, we cannot comment at this time," Auburn assistant athletic director/media relations Kirk Sampson said. "However, Cam Newton is eligible to play football at Auburn."
Auburn has a great compliance office and this is the first sign that things look okay, at least for now, for Auburn. If there was any concern that shady dealings affected his arrival at Auburn, I find it hard to believe that they would allow Cam to play. Especially this week. Good thing it's UT-Chat right?
The second point that I found to be interesting about the article is that nowhere is Auburn mentioned except to state that he has lead Auburn to 9-0 and that he is the quarterback. His father has been contacted by the NCAA regarding the allegations but he also states no wrongdoing.
After reading the story, one should notice that it was a former Bulldog player that is the agent in question. Not a former Tiger. Does that mean drop the books and no worries for the Tigers? Of course not. An agent is out to make a dollar no matter where he went to school but it does seem odd to have a graduate offering a discount to his school and then selling him off to another team in the same division no less the same conference.
Is Auburn clean? Many hope so. There is no doubt this could be a "Reggie Bush, here we go again" incident for the SEC and Auburn. But then again, this could be no news that is becoming news quickly.
With that being said, one saying that I have always found true is where there is smoke there is, or was, fire. Was there something brewing a year ago involving the recruitment of Cameron Newton? Who knows? It wouldn't surprise me. The key is that the article was focused again on an offer to Mississippi State.
With Cecil Newton being open to give his finances away to the NCAA, that starts the good ball rolling. The fact that his church has some needs is something that looks not to be on the up and up but what church this day in age doesn't need some help? By no means am I saying that means that he is guilty, but for all intents and purposes it shows that it is nothing out of the ordinary.
Did the Newton family take money from Kenny Rogers? No one but the Newton's and Rogers no for sure at this point. One thing is for sure, if they did they should be punished. If Auburn knew, Auburn should be punished as well.
So far, this shows nothing except that an agent tried to sale a recruit to a school that they didn't sign with. If Rogers was the agent for Newton, wouldn't Newton go where he was told? Who knows, but one thing is for sure, the NCAA will do their due diligence to find out.
