BCS Rankings Week 3: 10 Teams That Could Rise the Most This Week
This week's BCS rankings are out, and looking forward to this week's slate of games, it's time to figure out who has the most to gain with a win this week.
Inside, I've given 10 teams that can rise the most. Now, I have this listed by who I think has the best chance of winning and how that will impact their BCS standing in the next release. If you agree or disagree, leave it in the comments as always.
No. 10: Iowa
1 of 10
While Iowa isn't playing a tough team this week, the Hawkeyes have plenty of teams in front of them that can lose and drop in the rankings.
With the big win over Michigan State, the Hawkeyes will have a prime opportunity to get closer to the top 10 in the BCS standings. An at-large bid for the BCS bowls wouldn't be out of the question if the right teams lose down the stretch, and this week might help that cause.
Playing Indiana is always a good way to come off of a big win.
No. 9: Baylor
2 of 10
Right now, Baylor would be playing in the Big 12 Championship and the Bears are going to try and keep that dream alive by beating No. 17 Oklahoma State this weekend.
A win would get the Bears into the top 20 of the BCS standings and keep the Bears going for at least one more week. Baylor would still have to beat Oklahoma to get to that title game, and that may end up being the ultimate test.
I don't see it happening, but a win would be huge.
No. 8: South Carolina
3 of 10
South Carolina takes on Arkansas in what is a major SEC clash between two teams right next to each other in the BCS standings.
The Gamecocks were rolling after beating defending champion Alabama to end the Crimson Tide's undefeated season, but then promptly dropped a game to Kentucky. I'm not sold on South Carolina, and I think Ryan Mallett and company will have success on Sunday.
A win would give the Gamecocks a big boost in the BCS, though.
No. 7: NC State
4 of 10
NC State just cracked into the top 25 with a big win over Florida State and will try to keep the good times rolling with a win over Clemson.
If the Wolfpack get another win and some teams fall above them, it's not hard to imagine NC State going up a couple spots in the rankings, especially with the Florida State win helping them in the computers. Then again, it's the ACC, so who knows what to expect?
I could easily see the Wolfpack rising up a spot or two.
No. 6: Oklahoma State
5 of 10
Oklahoma State is still pushing toward the Big 12 Championship game, and that run starts next Saturday with a game against Baylor.
The Cowboys will have to beat the Bears and then rival Oklahoma if they want to make it to the title game and a shot at a BCS bowl game, and it's a very winnable game. Baylor is a tough team, but Oklahoma State is the better team.
A win would not only help get the Cowboys closer to the conference title game, but would also bump Oklahoma State up in the polls.
No. 5: LSU
6 of 10
LSU takes on No. 6 Alabama, and if that's not enough, the loser of the TCU and Utah game will likely fall below the winner of that game.
There's a lot on the line in this game for both teams, and a lot of ground can be made up in the BCS for the Tigers with a win and you know that Les Miles is going to be putting it all on the line like he does every week with his highwire act when it comes to coaching.
The Tigers could be shooting up the BCS in less than a week.
No. 4: Utah
7 of 10
Utah is fifth in the BCS standings, and it has a showdown at home against No. 3 TCU this Saturday, a game that will eliminate one of the BCS busters from title contention.
The Utes won't make a huge leap in the polls but a couple of spots isn't unrealistic either. It's a big game that the Utes couldn't take last year, and you know they want revenge for that defeat, as TCU went on to play in a BCS bowl.
All eyes will be on this game this Saturday.
No. 3: Stanford
8 of 10
Stanford takes on Arizona, and a win, combined with a couple of losses in front, would certainly help the Cardinal's position in the BCS standings.
The Cardinal only have one loss on the year, and that was to No. 1 Oregon. Stanford is pretty much out of it in terms of a conference championship and, in all likelihood, a BCS bowl appearance, but there is no reason the Cardinal can't be in a great bowl game.
A win here is a must for that to be a reality.
No. 2: Arkansas
9 of 10
Arkansas takes on South Carolina this week and while the Razorbacks fell short against Alabama, I think this is a game that Alabama takes.
While the Gamecocks did beat Alabama, they also lost to Kentucky and I think Ryan Mallett and company will have a big day and give the South Carolina defense plenty of trouble all day long. It's going to be another SEC war but a fun one.
I think Mallett leads Arkansas to a win, and the Razorbacks rise in the polls.
No. 1: Alabama
10 of 10
The Crimson Tide take on LSU in one of the biggest games of the year and certainly the biggest game in the SEC.
Alabama is making a huge run at the national title game and winning out would certainly accomplish that. We've seen Auburn make a big hop in the BCS after a win over the Tigers, so why not the Crimson Tide? I think Alabama wins this game and continues towards a repeat.
With a win, Alabama will definitely hop the loser of TCU and Utah and maybe a few others.
