Utah Utes Football: Undefeated and Ranked No. 5... Still No Love

John RozumNov 1, 2010

The Utah Utes and rival TCU are heading into arguably the biggest game in the history of each school.

Not to mention this is also arguably the biggest game in the history of the Mountain West Conference.

After three weeks of BCS standings, the Utes are ranked fifth. But in the AP Poll and the USA Today Coaches' Poll, Utah is ranked behind one-loss Alabama.

Any school in the SEC obviously has a more difficult schedule than anyone in the Mountain West Conference. From top to bottom there's just no comparison.

But how can anyone discount the Utes when they are still unbeaten like their TCU counterpart? It seems as though the BCS likes the Utes, at least in comparison to the human polls.

Then to add more wood to the fire, does anyone realize that the MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE has two undefeated teams ranked in the Top Five of the BCS?

College football history is right in front of our eyes, and no one is recognizing it.

Also if you take a look at the College Football front page on ESPN.com, the Utes are not mentioned anywhere, whether it be headlines or "must-reads."

I know TCU had a No. 7 preseason ranking and is now third in the current BCS rankings, and that Utah has been slowly creeping up from its No. 24 preseason ranking. ("Creep" by TLC, anyone? Just a thought.)

But you would think to this point in the season the Utes would have earned more recognition for their efforts.

However, in the media's defense, they have had four other unbeaten teams to report on.

Which is why I like the Utes.

If Utah pulls off the W on Saturday against TCU, I expect a media explosion to occur (discussions regarding a chance at the national title).

Trying to describe—in words—the opportunity this week for the No. 5-ranked Utah Utes does not do it enough justice.

This week's game could prop either school into the No. 2 spot in the BCS rankings. It would be the first time for a non-BCS conference school to earn that high of a ranking. And we all know what that means.

A shot at the NCAA Division I FBS National Championship.
