Champions League: Expect Reaction From Wounded Tottenham Hotspur

Chris ArcherNov 1, 2010

I am looking forward greatly to Tuesday night and the return game with Inter Milan at White Hart Lane. Spurs will be wounded by the injustices of their game on Saturday at Old Trafford and ready to go out all guns blazing at the European Champions.

Tottenham will have gained confidence from Gareth Bales' second-half hat trick at the San Siro and they will still be fuming at the appalling decision of referee Mark Clattenberg in the Theatre of Screams.  I expect this to be a cocktail that drives Spurs on to victory in this game.

Tottenham managed to turn early disaster and a 4-0 halftime scoreline into a positive by coming back to finish 4-3 and give Inter a fright.  Bale gave Maicon, the Brazilian international, a torrid time in the second half scoring three wonderful goals and raising the hopes of a more successful home game.  Spurs had a secret weapon in Bale at the San Siro but I would think the defensive-minded Benitez will be plotting to stop him at White hart Lane.

More recently Spurs put up a decent performance at Old Trafford, only to be denied a grandstand finish by the ridiculous refereeing of Mark Clattenberg.  He robbed them of the chance to get anything from the game with a decision that only Manchester United at home would get.

It is a widely-held opinion that should the sequence of events unfolded at the other end, the goal would never have stood. Even after having the error of his ways pointed out to him by the assistant referee, he still decided that clear and observed handball was not a foul on this occasion.

The Spurs were rightly riled by such a glaring error and I think this will add to their determination to beat Inter Milan tomorrow night.   They will be hoping that Tom Huddlestone and Rafael Van Der Vaart are both able to take part, as they are both very important to the way Spurs play at the moment.

Less so Aaron Lennon, who I expect to be on the bench as his performances have been less than determined in recent matches. Crouch will presumably start up front, replacing Robbie Keane, who couldn't contribute much as a lone striker on Saturday.

It will be absolutely rocking at the Lane and Inter Milan can expect to be stretched to the fullest.  Coys!
