BCS Standings 2010: Five Surprises With the Newest Rankings

Brandon GalvinNov 1, 2010

Once again the BCS standings are out and everyone is going to have their opinion of what is right, wrong, and surprising with the current standings.

This past weekend saw a few dominant performances.

A couple of highly regarded teams were finally beaten, dropping them outside the top 10.

Which teams should have been moved up and down?

Which teams were placed just right this week?

Agree or disagree, these are a few of the surprises that caught my eye this week.

5. Ohio St. Still Outside Top 10

I realize the team is just one spot outside the top 10, but I trust this team far more than LSU.

The defense has played fantastic throughout the season.

I’ll still take Terrelle Pryor and Jim Tressel. I think next week we’ll finally see them back in the top 10. I understand LSU only lost to Auburn, the No. 2 ranked team in the nation, but I see them slipping outside the top 10 when they lose to Alabama this weekend.

I expect Ohio St. to control Penn State this week and put themselves back in the top 10.

4. Oklahoma over Wisconsin

Perhaps it’s because they haven’t played since October 23, but after two wins over ranked teams, one over Ohio St. who was No. 1 at the time, I thought the standings would place them higher.

I like the makeup of the Sooners team but this past weekend was merely an expected bounce back after a tough loss. I expected Oklahoma to beat Missouri two weeks ago so perhaps I’m still disappointed in that.

It would have been nice to see Wisconsin higher, as I don’t think they have a chance to make it any higher the rest of the way. Oklahoma for example should win out while finishing the season against two beatable ranked opponents.

3. Stanford Over Michigan St., Arizona, and Iowa

I believe all three of these teams should be ranked over Stanford.

I realize Arizona was a touchdown better than Iowa Week 3. Also that Iowa lost a one-point heartbreaker to Wisconsin. However, their recent manhandling over previously unbeaten Michigan St. deserves a bit more credit in my eyes.

Michigan St. loses to a quality team, and dropped way too far down the polls for my liking despite their dud.

Stanford is good, and Andrew Luck is a star. I didn’t think they would beat USC Week 6, but these three other teams have proven much more to me throughout the season.

2. TCU over Boise St. For No. 3

Boise State has been entrenched as a top three team yet it seems TCU’s 42-point rout over UNLV pulled them ahead of Boise St.

Boise St. was not too impressive last Tuesday night, winning by only 29 points. 49 points is impressive, but the defense seemed to have let the team down for this week’s polls.

The BCS could be doing a bit of foreshadowing. If TCU beats Utah next week they will definitely deserve their No. 3 ranking. I’m just surprised it happened this week, I thought the Broncos would stay in the top three.

1. Oregon over Auburn For No. 1

Oregon has been my No. 1 team for a few weeks now, but this still ranks No. 1 on my list because I did not think the BCS would rank them over Auburn.

I was impressed with Oregon’s victory over USC. Although I expected Oregon to take care of business—I knew it would be a close game for the most part because USC matches up well against the Ducks. It was a fast paced, hard hitting game and the Ducks managed to pull away in the middle of the third quarter and never looked back.

Even though LaMichael James and Darron Thomas combined for seven touchdowns, I thought the BCS would keep last week’s No. 1 atop the rankings.

After two consecutive victories over ranked teams, the Auburn Tigers took care of business against Mississippi. He didn’t have a productive rushing day, but Heisman hopeful Cam Newton threw two touchdowns and made a great play on the touchdown that he caught—proving that he can do it all on the field.

While it does surprise me, I’m happy that Oregon finally got the top spot. Hopefully they don’t go down the path of Alabama and Ohio St.

I do expect Cam Newton to have one of his best games against Chattanooga this weekend and have his Tigers pushing Oregon for No. 1 again in next week's polls.

Expect these two teams to battle for the top spot the rest of the way.
