College Football's National Championship, Who Will Be In The BCS Title Game?
This week held several big games, and while there were surprises there weren't any big upsets. Missouri and Michigan State both lost their first game on the road, eliminating any chance of a national championship for them. Oregon beat the USC Trojans, while Auburn, Alabama, TCU, and Boise State all won decisively.
With only a few weeks left, there are five remaining undefeated teams, and a one loss team that is still in the middle of the action. Here are the teams most likely to play in the national championship game.
6. Utah Utes
1 of 6
Utah remains on this list purely because they haven't been defeated yet, but I don't have any hopes that the zero will remain in the loss column for much longer.
Now it all gets fun, as Utah faces TCU. If Utah gets an upset there, then they still have to go to South Bend and face a desperate Irish, then face a surprising San Diego State Aztecs, before ending the season against the rival Cougars from Provo. It's a tough road ahead, but if they do happen to win out, maybe, just maybe, they can convince someone they deserve to play for it all.
Wishful thinking if you ask me.
5. Auburn Tigers
2 of 6
Auburn continues to steamroll and play like one of the best teams in the country. As of now, Oregon and Auburn are 1-2 in the BCS rankings and that looks like a dream matchup for all of the fans of college football.
There is only one reason they are ranked so low in this list: they have to go to Tuscaloosa and play the reigning national champions. Assuming only one team can go from the SEC, Nov. 26 will be a winner take all match. I choose 'Bama.
Its hard to pick against Auburn, but I just have a feeling that all of the hype and pressure of being at the top is going to get to them. I could be wrong on this one though.
4. TCU Horned Frogs
3 of 6
TCU's defense is the best in the nation and they are a great football team, but its true that they haven't been tested week in and week out. So what does that mean? It means they are still undefeated, but they need a lot of help to move up on this list.
The Horned Frogs have waltzed through the season so far, but the next two weeks just might be their toughest tests of the year, as they face an undefeated Utah and a surprising San Diego State. If TCU can win those games, then they'll get a boost in the computers due to a tougher schedule, and maybe even a boost by the humans as well.
They are the darkhorse as of now, and they'll need all the help they can get.
3. Boise State Broncos
4 of 6
The Broncos are the darlings of the year, but there is no denying the fact that they won't move past an undefeated Oregon or Auburn, and probably not past a one-loss Alabama. Heck, TCU might even pass the Broncos if they play well enough against Utah.
There are still a few weeks left before it all is decided, and as long as Boise State wins out, they will get a BCS berth. The heart of their schedule is ahead as they play Hawaii (7-2), Fresno State (5-2), and Nevada (7-1). None of these teams are power houses, but they all boast respectable records, and just might be enough to sneak these boys in blue into the number two spot.
2. Alabama Crimson Tide
5 of 6
Alabama does have one loss, but if they win out, then they'll be in the top two of the BCS rankings. Whether or not they deserve to be there is another question. I'd love to see 'Bama go up against the Broncos or Horned Frogs in a playoff game, but that is a debate for another time.
As for now, Alabama has to go to Baton Rouge to play a one-loss LSU team, then go home to play a two-loss Miss State, before gearing up for the biggest game of the year, when they'll host an undefeated Auburn.
If they win all of those, they'll still have to play Florida or S. Carolina in the SEC Championship game. Will they win them all? I don't know. But I do know this, if they do, they'll be playing in Glendale.
1. Oregon Ducks
6 of 6
The Oregon Ducks are rolling, and for the longest time, I thought they'd have a slip up against a Pac 10 team. They still have four conference games remaining, including a pretty good Arizona team, and the in-state Beavers, who always play well against the Ducks in Corvalis. But, to be honest, I thought the slip up would come against the Trojans in the Coliseum.
If the Ducks can get through the year without a loss, they deserve to be considered the best team in the nation, and will rightfully earn a spot playing in the title game. But, if they happen to lose, then they might just open a door for the little guys behind them.
My heart wants them to lose, but my eyes can't make my head believe it. They are really freaking good.
