Denard Robinson: The Reason College Football Is So Exciting
At this point in the season, it has become obvious who the frontrunners for the Heisman Trophy are.
Sure, you can consider Terrelle Pryor. After all, he is the best player on the best team in the country right now. Or you can consider Kellen Moore on the underrated, under-appreciated Boise State team. He leads all Division 1-A quarterbacks with a QB rating of 183.3 and has consistently proven his doubters wrong throughout his college career.
Yet, neither of these guys are as dynamic of a player as Denard Robinson of the Michigan Wolverines. Robinson is leading the nation in rushing yards with 991 on the ground, from the quarterback position no less.
It's not like the guy is filling in on the Wildcat here—he is running the entire offense at the same time.
Robinson is not as efficient of a passer as Kellen Moore or Terrelle Pryor. Yet, he gets the job done, and that is what makes college football so exciting. To have the all-around talent it takes to play a position like quarterback—and to do it with such flair as Robinson has done pretty well so far this season—is enough to draw attention to the young Wolverines squad.
Robinson will need to do a lot more if he hopes to have a shot at winning the Heisman, but for now, the first-year prodigy is showing a great deal of promise. There have been moments that he has not looked so spectacular, like the Michigan State game. Even still, he is to be held accountable for 301 yards of total offense in that game.
Robinson should be entertaining to watch for the remainder of the season. Rich Rodriguez is going to have to find creative ways to use Robinson today as Michigan faces off against Big Ten rival and No. 15-ranked Iowa at home. This should be a can't-miss game in today's action-packed Saturday of college football.
