Brett Favre Should Announce His Retirement: Effective Immediately

Andy BaileyOct 13, 2010

Whether we're talking football or unwanted sexual advances, poor Brett Favre just doesn't know when to quit.  Well, let me give you a hint Brett, the time is now.

Favre is one of the greatest quarterbacks that ever played football, and apparently that's not the only game he's been playing.  This season, it has become painfully obvious that he's past his prime, both on the field and off of it.

Through five games, the former Super Bowl contender Vikings are 1-3.  Favre has completed 57 percent of his passes and thrown five touchdowns and seven interceptions.  His quarterback rating is a measly 67.

Favre just couldn't swallow his pride after falling to the Saints last year.  He had to come back and prove that he could still play.  Even after undergoing ankle surgery at the age of 40, he was still confident that his body could sustain at least 16 more games.

He's dealing with the ailing ankle and now he has tendinitis in his throwing elbow.  Wait, how old is Brett again?  Oh yeah, that's right, he's 41.  Most men's bodies start breaking down around that age, or even earlier, and most men haven't played in nearly 300 NFL games.

His body is screaming at him to stop, and has been since before the season started.

As for the other game (the one he never should have started), self-confidence was Favre's undoing here as well.  Why would a married man in his late thirties pursue a young, beautiful sports reporter by sending her inappropriate voice mails and explicit (and creepy) photographs?

Sounds to me like he's a little too sure of himself.

These athletes must know that horrible decisions like this are going to blow up in their faces eventually.  No matter how entitled they feel, they have to realize there are certain lines you just don't cross.

Everything that is going on with Brett right now is ruining his legacy, as a football player, and as a man.

He needs to walk away right now.  The Vikings are not going to catch the Bears or Packers in the NFC North.  They'd be better off going back to Tarvaris Jackson and a run-heavy offense with Adrian Peterson and Toby Gerhart.

After Favre's recent mock retirements, a mid-season exit really wouldn't feel all that unconventional.
