Vikings Vs. Jets: Five Storylines For Monday Night Football

Adam SpencerOct 11, 2010

Tonight on Monday Night Football, Randy Moss, Brett Favre, and the Minnesota Vikings will travel to the New Meadowlands Stadium to take on Mark Sanchez, Darrelle Revis, and the New York Jets.

There has been a lot of buzz surrounding this game, some of it negative (Brett Favre scandal), some of it positive (the return of Darrelle Revis), all of it entertaining.

Only in New York can a game with so many storylines take place.  Here are the top five storylines for tonight's game:

5. Rex Ryan Vs. Brad Childress

Rex Ryan is a leader of men.  You get the feeling when you hear Jets players talk that they would die for him, he's that inspirational of a coach.

He'll say outrageous things to deflect media attention from his players.  He'll say what needs to be said.  And, most importantly, he won't make excuses.

On the other side of the field will be Brad Childress.  Ever since Brett Favre donned the purple and gold last year, there have been rumors of discontent in the locker room.

Favre says Childress is a dictator when it comes to calling plays, taking little to no input from Favre, a three-time NFL MVP.

If things continue down that path, Childress will lose control of his team, something Rex Ryan will never do.

4. Adrian Peterson Vs. the Jets' Run Defense

Can Adrian Peterson, one of the two best running backs in the league (the other being Chris Johnson of course), run the ball effectively against New York's stout run defense?

My bet is that Peterson will finish somewhere between 90-110 yards with a touchdown, but the Jets will keep him from hitting the home run.  He'll have to work hard for every yard.

It will also be interesting to see if the Jets can force Peterson to put the ball on the ground a time or two.

3. The Return of Santonio Holmes

Tonight will be the first time Santonio Holmes will play for the New York Jets after sitting out four games because of a violation of the league's substance abuse policy.

Teaming up Holmes with Braylon Edwards will give the Jets' offense a huge boost.  It will also put a great deal of pressure on Minnesota corners Asher Allen and Antoine Winfield.

Look for Mark Sanchez to try to hit his new target with a couple early deep throws.

2. Randy Moss Vs. Darrelle Revis, Part Two

Darrelle Revis hasn't played since Randy Moss beat him on a deep touchdown pass in Week 2.

Meanwhile, Moss hasn't played effectively since then, and now has a new team.

Tonight will be a shot at redemption for both players.  Revis will try to show he can still lock down any wide receiver in the league, and Moss is out to prove he is still the best receiver in the NFL.

The edge goes to Revis in this game though, as long as he can stay healthy.  Moss has had only one week to learn a new offense, so I'd expect him to have a couple miscommunications with Favre, leading to an interception by Revis.

1. The Brett Favre Tabloid Scandal

Will Brett Favre be the next big athlete to be shamed by an embarrassing infidelity scandal?  Personally, I hope not, but there seems to be a lot of evidence to the contrary.

Favre is accused of leaving suggestive voicemails and sending inappropriate cell phone pictures to a former Jets' sideline reporter.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is investigating the matter, so we'll see what the NFL thinks.  It's important to note that although there is a lot of evidence that Favre is at fault in this scandal, he should receive the benefit of the doubt until something is proven.

Tonight, we'll see if these allegations affect his play on the field.  Favre seems to always handle adversity very well on the football field.  But against the Jets and Darrelle Revis, tonight's game will be one he'll try to forget.
