2010 College Football Heisman Hopefuls Ranked: Week Six

Kenneth MOct 10, 2010

After week six of the college football season, it looks like we'll have a new winner of the coveted Heisman Trophy. Last year's winner, Mark Ingram of Alabama, was hoping to be the first repeat winner since Archie Griffin, but after a day of struggles for Ingram and the Crimson Tide, it looks like his time on this list has come and gone. So, who is in line to win the award this year? The answer lies ahead.

Because some teams' stat lines looks better than others, I included the Total Yards and Total TDs of each player, plus the Percentage of Total Yards, and Percentage of Total TDs, so you can see what impact each player has had on his own team.

6. Andrew Luck, Stanford Cardinals

Andrew Luck threw a nearly perfect ballgame on Saturday against Pac-10 rivals USC. Luck went 20-24 for 285 yards and three touchdowns. Luck didn't throw any interceptions, but he did lose one fumble. Luck continues to roll, and led a good drive late in the fourth quarter to help Stanford stay afloat in the chase for a Pac-10 championship.

Luck probably hasn't convinced voters that he deserves to be in the top echelon yet, but as long as he keeps playing well, he'll keep hanging around this list.

5. LaMichael James, Oregon Ducks

Oregon's offense is rolling, and James is a big part of it. So why is Mr. James so low on this list? There is one very simple explanation: He is only responsible for 28 percent of his team's offense, and doesn't even have half of his teams total rushing yards. Everybody else on this list is responsible for over 50 percent of their team's offense.

The fact is that he is a very good player on a very good offense—but, he is only a small part of that offense. If stats are the reason a guy is on the list, then look at the entire picture. The big picture says that he is not top echelon material, yet.

4. Kellen Moore, Boise State Broncos

Kellen Moore is the most efficient passer in the FBS. That is like being the smartest kid in class: You get accolades, but you probably don't get the trophy girlfriend. Moore probably won't get the Heisman Trophy either... or a chance at a national championship.

I like the guy, he is good, and leads one of the best teams in the country. Now only if he was given a chance to prove that. Alabama's loss is not going to help at all, unless they happen to lose again. As for now, congrats Moore, you are a the smartest kid in class.

Now we are onto the guys who actually have a chance at winning this thing. The top three has become pretty clear, and Pryor is definitely in the thick of it. This Saturday, Terrelle threw for over 300 yards and three TD.

As long as Ohio State has a zero in the loss column and a one in the rankings, Mr. Pryor should be considered one of the favorites to hoist the trophy at the end of the year. The heart of the season still lies ahead, and if Ohio State runs the table, Terrelle Pryor will be in great position to get the two most coveted trophies in college football, the Heisman and the BCS Championship.

2. Cameron Newton, Auburn Tigers

Only one guy on this list made a positive statement on Saturday, and that guy is Newton. Cameron Newton was playing in junior college last year, and now he is looking like the favorite to take home the player of the year in the big boys league. Mr. Newton has proven himself to be a star, and Auburn looks like they actually might be for real.

On Saturday, Newton threw for 200 yards, and ran for 198 and four TDs. Great numbers, but the big tests come in the next two weeks. If Newton is still smiling after those games, then he might be residing on the top of this list. Cameron Newton, now is your time to shine.

As of last week the trophy was already his, but the State school proved who was the better team in Michigan, and made Superman look more like Wonder Woman. Denard is still in the lead, but only because of his insane stats up to this point.

The big question is, can he rebound after throwing three interceptions? If he can lead Michigan to a few impressive wins, he has a shot. But, if Saturday was any indication of how Michigan is going to play from here on out, then Mr. Robinson may start to slide.
