NFL Week 5 Picks: Five Surprises To Look Out For This Weekend
In a season in which the Kansas City Chiefs are the last undefeated team standing, it is safe to assume that the early stages of this season have been anything but ordinary.
Few could have predicted that Texans running back Arian Foster would run for 231 yards against the Colts in Week 1, as well as the Steelers' 3-1 start with Dennis Dixon and Charlie Batch at quarterback while Ben Roethlisberger served a four-game suspension.
With that in mind, here are five possible surprises that may shock the football world come Sunday.
1. Cardinals QB Max Hall Wins in His First NFL Start Against The Saints
1 of 5
Matt Leinart and Derek Anderson never showed potential to be the next Kurt Warner.
Cardinals coach Ken Wisenhunt and his staff hope rookie quarterback Max Hall will be the answer as makes his first career start against the defending Super Bowl champion Saints on Sunday.
Last week, Hall, a BYU product, replaced Anderson in the second half of the team's 38-10 loss to the Chargers, going 8-for-14 for 82 yards.
The Saints haven't played in a blowout all season, with all four of their games decided by five points or less. The loss of Reggie Bush was a blow to the offensive juggernaut of last season.
Do not be surprised if Larry Fitzgerald returns to fantasy football scoreboards nationwide in a Cardinals victory.
2. 49ers Earn First Win of Season Against Eagles
2 of 5
In what is now the least tantalizing Sunday Night Football match-up in recent history, the 49ers will take advantage of a Michael Vick-less Eagle team and post their first win of the season at Monster Park.
The Niners have played elite opponents tough throughout the season, losing to the Saints and the Falcons by a combined five points.
Frank Gore appears to have finally picked up some momentum after a slow start to his season, and linebacker Patrick Willis and the rest of the San Francisco defense need to maintain a high level for an entire game.
3. Lions RB Jahvid Best Will Stand Out Against The Rams
3 of 5
Despite a toe injury, it is possible that the rookie may finally have a breakout game when it comes to rushing yards against the Rams, who have allowed just one 100-yard running back this season (Raiders RB Darren McFadden in Week 2).
Best's career-high thus far is a 78-yard performance against the Eagles in Week 2 (he did tally 154 yards and one touchdown receiving), and Sunday may be his first opportunity to impress on the ground.
4. Titans Defeat Cowboys at Arlington, Tex.
4 of 5
After being held to 53 yards rushing last week, Chris Johnson is due for another big game; this time, he may very well do so against the Cowboys on the road.
While the Cowboys are ranked eighth in the league on rush defense, allowing just 83 yards per game, Johnson's abilities have rendered such stats useless in the past.
Speaking of rushing, the Cowboys haven't developed a run game this season, preventing them from truly looking like the Super Bowl contenders they could be.
5. The Colts Upset The Chiefs
5 of 5
I realize this isn't much of a surprise, but the Chiefs face their first test as a pass defense against Peyton Manning on Sunday.
Kansas City's three wins have come against San Diego, San Francisco, and Cleveland; hardly three of the best teams in the NFL.
Manning will have his usual 300 yards and three touchdowns, and this game will be over by halftime. The Colts will dominate in a blowout.
