2010 NFL Power Rankings: Top 10 Most Disappointing Teams and Players
We're four weeks in, and the Kansas City Chiefs- that's right, the Kansas City Chiefs, are the only undefeated team in football so far. Don't worry '72 Dolphins- can't imagine the Chiefs seriously challenging your undefeated season.
Players and teams across the country have shown how the NFL has turned into a league of parity, with a whopping 24 teams having at least 2 wins. Heck, even the Chiefs are undefeated partly because they had a Bye during Week 4!
With that stated, 21 teams have at least two losses so far. Simply put, there hasn't been much dominance so far, and a whole lot of disappointment.
Here we rank the top 10 disappointing players and teams of the young 2010 season.
Miami Dolphins Special Teams
1 of 10
The Dolphins started the season at 2-0, with back-to-back road victories in Buffalo and Minnesota. Then they came home, to face two division rivals in prime-time games, and fell flat on their faces.
They can thank their special teams big time for that.
Against New England, they had a kick returned for a touchdown and a field goal blocked for a touchdown... in the same half. Not that the first half was much better (a punt blocked).
Kicker Dan Carpenter is 5-of-7, after missing only three times all of last season, and the return game has been lifeless since Ted Ginn Jr. left.
All of this led to the firing of Special Teams coordinator John Bonamego.
Cincinnati Bengals...Yes, You Cedric Benson
2 of 10
Coming into the season, the Bengals seemed aimed to make a deep run into the playoffs. They added Terrell Owens as a top #2 option to Chad Ochocinco, and they returned the entire defense that dominated most of last season.
So what's happened? At 2-2, they're third in their own division, and now the Pittsburgh Steelers are getting Ben Roethlisberger back making them even more formidable. But their D is actually the worst in their division, and ranks 18th in the league in points allowed.
Cedric Benson looks nothing like the rejuvenated version that carried Cincy's offense last season, averaging only 3.3 YPC, and taking away Ochocinco's monster first game (monster meaning monster stats compiled in garbage time), he's had just 11 catches for 137 yards and no touchdowns the last three games.
The Bengals are a very talented team, but they will struggle to stay relevant in the playoff race if they continue to play this poorly.
Indianapolis Colts
3 of 10
Yes, they're the Colts, and they have Peyton Manning (who has been his wonderful self again this season). But this team is already battling injuries, and the only thing worse than their running game is their defense.
Heck, even David Garrard looked like, well, Peyton Manning, against them. Through four games, the Colts are 2-2, but 0-2 in the division.
Though they rank second in the league in points scored, they're tied for 24th in the league in points allowed, and watched Arian Foster put together a 231-yard rushing effort against them, and Kyle Orton put up a ridiculous 476 yards passing against them.
It doesn't matter how great this offense is, the defense will keep this team back. And for once, I can legitimately say, watch out for Houston. The Colts' reign on top may soon be coming to an end.
Arizona Cardinals Offense
4 of 10
Yes, they're 2-2, and technically in first place in the NFC West. But their offense is an absolute disgrace.
Through four games, they've scored 58 points...with 7 of those coming on a pick-six last week. Derek Anderson was benched last game, and they've already named rookie QB Max Hall as their starter this week against the Saints. Good luck.
Hall is an undrafted rookie QB, and they honestly thought before the year that he was good enough insurance on Derek Anderson. Really, Arizona?
Arizona QB's have been sacked 15 times through four games, and are responsible for 8 turnovers.
All-World WR Larry Fitzgerald has been held to 19 catches for 208 yards and 2 touchdowns through four games, and they've already suffered injuries to RB Beanie Wells and WR's Steve Breaston and Early Doucet.
Anybody who thinks Kurt Warner isn't a Hall of Famer should see how bad this offense is without him.
Andy Reid
5 of 10
Andy Reid has his Eagles at 2-2, in a three-way tie for first in the NFC East. So what's Reid doing on this list?
First off, the QB he traded away (Donovan McNabb) just came into Philadelphia on Sunday and beat the Eagles. The QB who was supposed to be "the future" and replace McNabb, Kevin Kolb, was knocked out in Week 1.
And the QB who replaced Kolb- Michael Vick- left last week's game against the Redskins with a rib injury, and has already been ruled out for this week's game in San Francisco.
Plus Reid went back on his word with Kolb being the starter after his injury- stating that he'd be the starter when he got back from his injury, only to reverse course a day later.
Reid's indecision was foolish, and he may have overhyped Kolb too much based off two games of replacing McNabb last year.
If the Eagles don't make the playoffs this season, Reid is going to have to answer for his decision to cut ties with McNabb.
Cleveland Browns
6 of 10
Yes- they've faced a very tough schedule so far (the combined record of their opponents is 10-4). But the Browns are 1-3 DESPITE leading in every game going into the fourth quarter.
Give the Browns credit (they're playing really tough), but it's gotta be demoralizing to lose three games when you had the lead at the end of the game.
This isn't a very talented Browns team, but knowing they could very easily be 4-0 makes being 1-3 that much harder.
Carolina Panthers
7 of 10
This team is simply too talented to be 0-4. Matt Moore being hurt definitely doesn't help, but he wasn't exactly a game-changer when he was playing.
Jonathan Stewart has been ineffective all year, and Carolina ranks last in the league in points per game.
Simply, this offense stinks, and with Steve Smith now out indefinitely (with a high ankle sprain), this offense is going to be really predictable: run, run, run, punt.
Throw in that Dwayne Jarrett was just cut in light of his second DWI in three years, and this offense is in shambles.
Vincent Jackson
8 of 10
Vincent Jackson held out, trying to show the Chargers how important he was to their offense. How's that working out Vince? Yes, the Chargers are only 2-2, but they start slow every year, and the AFC West isn't a powerhouse- the Chargers are still the favorites.
And the passing offense hasn't missed a beat, with Rivers ranking third in the NFL in passing yards, and tied for second in touchdowns.
His replacement, Malcolm Floyd, hasn't exactly been All-World, but he ranks 16th in the league in receiving yards. Plus Marcus McNeill, the Chargers Offensive Lineman who was also holding out, took the Chargers offer.
Add on that the only serious trading partner the Chargers had were the Vikings, who just acquired Randy Moss, it looks like Jackson is going to sit out the entire year of his prime.
Brett Favre
9 of 10
Not a good year for Favre. Not only is he struggling statistically (2 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, under 200 YPG), the Vikings, Super Bowl favorites in many people's eyes, are 1-2.
And even a day after Favre got a BIG gift when the Vikings acquired Randy Moss, allegations, voicemails, and pictures surfaced of Favre seemingly hitting on TV personality Jenn Sterger.
If these allegations are true, don't expect to see him playing touch football with friends in those Wrangler commercials anymore.
And if the Vikes offensive struggles continue, don't expect to see Favre back with the Purple People Eaters next season.
San Francisco 49ers
10 of 10
This team was everybody's pick to win the NFC West before the season started. While I still believe they'll win the division , I never would have guessed they'd be 0-4.
They've been blown out twice against teams with inferior talent (the Chiefs and the Seahawks), and have already fired their offensive coordinator. Their defense ranks 27th in the league, their offense ranks 31st in points scored.
This team is way too good on both sides to be ranked this lowly, and the NFC West is so bad that at 0-4, the 49ers are STILL the favorite to win the division.
But very surprised to see this team so unprepared so far this season. If they don't rebound, don't expect to see Mike Singletary back roaming the sidelines next year.
