Heisman Hopeful Or Woeful? Why Denard Robinson Will Not Win

Bret BoyleSep 29, 2010

Though the 2010 college football season has only just begun, there is no arguing that it's single most electrifying player has been Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson. Whether it has been through the air or his shoelaces flapping in the wind, this kid score the touchdown. Many agree that if the Heisman voting were to take place right now, heading into week five, that Robinson would win by an apocalyptic landslide. Kellen Moore, Ryan Mallet and Andrew Luck would potentially be candidates to "steal his thunder", but not one of those players thus far has been able to single handedly take over a game like Robinson.

1. Lack of Passing Game

The safest way to compare Robinson to someone else would be to Michael Vick. Michael Vick is a good quarterback, why isn't he great? Why is he not elite? His passing game just simply not as polished as say Peyton Manning's or Drew Brees. Robinson has enough to get by, that is it. His delivery is off, his footwork is not the best and he simply has no game changing receivers. I would take Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck any day of the week, he can do both, and frankly just looks more polished and makes better decisions.

2. No Defense

As good as Denard has been in the first four weeks of the season can be said about how dismal the rest of the team looks. The defense, (if that's how you choose to refer to it) has been trying to make a statement but have fallen flat. Giving up thirty seven points to UMass? Ready for Ohio State this year? Overall, Michigan's defense is ranked 64th in the nation giving up twenty-three points per game. That's not all that bad, but against teams like UMass, Bowling Green and Notre Dame that would be equivalent to holding the Buckeyes to sixty.

3. Conference Play

Michigan has played a schedule that has lacked tough opponents in the first four weeks, it's a fact. Connecticut was a bust this year, Bowling Green and UMass don't have exciting pedigrees, and Notre Dame, oh Notre Dame. Anyway, once they start Big Ten play it will be a whole different story; teams will be planning around Shoelace and soley. Ohio State has not had a player rush for over one-hundred yards in twenty seven games, a feat dating back to 2008 when USC's Joe McKnight exploited them. Also take into consideration the defenses of Iowa and Wisconsin. If Robinson can run all over these three defense then yes the odds are that he will probably win the Heisman. Depending on if those games result in Michigan victories.

Overall, there is just too many precise quarterbacks in college football that are just better than Robinson. The trust says that the trophy goes to the most valueble player in college football. If Michigan cannot win games then they will sink Denard Robinson's hopes of traveling to New York, however good he may be. So this year Denard Robinson will not win the Heisman Trophy
