Boise State-Oregon State: Broncos Need To Blow Out Beavers to Get Respect

James BrownSep 24, 2010

The Boise State Broncos attempt to pad their résumé for a run at the national championship as they host the Oregon State Beavers on the blue turf.

College football odds makers at BetMania have Boise St. as heavy chalk, laying 17.5 points at home.

No other team in the country has been as motivated by disrespect as Boise St. Many of the experts say that they are not good enough to play with the best teams in the country and that their schedule does not warrant a No. 1 ranking.

The Broncos will take a big step in proving them wrong if they can defeat Oregon St.

Oregon St. head coach Mike Riley is getting his team ready for this marquee matchup and has the athletes to pull off the upset. The headliners for this team are running back Jacquizz Rodgers and his brother, wide receiver James. They are always a threat to score when they catch the ball and are the main targets for quarterback Ryan Katz.

Katz is young and unproven but is learning quickly as he makes his third career start. He has to improve on his accuracy if he wants to emerge victorious on the blue turf. The home field and the blue turf at Boise have not been kind to visitors.

Boise St. always fills the stands with diehard fans, and they should get even more attention in a prime time game that has drawn the ESPN GameDay crew. The Broncos thrive here and have an amazing record of 63-2 in the last 10 years at home.

The Broncos offense is the heartbeat of this team, and it’s led by quarterback Kellen Moore. Moore is a true Heisman candidate and can put up points in a hurry. His top receiving targets, Titus Young and Austin Pettis, are experts at getting open and running with the ball after the catch.

Running backs D.J. Harper, Doug Martin, and Jeremy Avery find huge holes and don’t allow opposing defenses to focus on the pass. The offensive line is one of the best in the country at making holes for the running backs and protecting Moore.

When it comes to trends for this meeting, the Broncos have the edge. Oregon St. is 0-3-1 against the spread (ATS) in the last four meetings and 1-4 ATS in its last five non-conference games. The Broncos are 19-7-1 ATS in their last 27 games overall, 17-7-1 ATS in their last 25 games following a win, and 40-19-1 ATS in their last 60 non-conference games.

The Broncos dominate on the home turf and cover the big numbers, as they are 39-18-2 ATS in their last 59 games as a home favorite.

When James Madison upset Virginia Teach, it devalued the opening week victory that Boise St. achieved, and now they have to make amends. In order to do that they have to beat ranked Oregon St. and beat them badly. Boise St. will be hard to ignore after this blowout win over the Beavers as they cruise to a victory.
