Michigan State, Alabama, and the Things They Have in Common in 2010

Larry BurtonSep 16, 2010

Larry Burton (Syndicated Writer) Sometimes as writers, we're asked some peculiar questions that often give us story ideas.

One such thing happened today.

I was asked which team has the most in common with Alabama.

I had to think for a minute because I'm mostly an SEC kind of guy, but the answer came after a few seconds: Michigan State.

Defensive Expectations

The Spartans were thinking they could do alright with the defensive line, but the secondary worried them this year. Sound familiar, Alabama fans?

Alabama has defensive stud Dont'a Hightower to anchor the line, and State has linebacker Greg Jones, who is doing a great job anchoring theirs.

Yet so far they've done alright, as had Alabama, and now will be tested after two relatively easy games. With Notre Dame as the Spartans' next opponent, many questions will finally be answered.

The same could be said after next week's Alabama-Arkansas matchup.

Balanced Offenses with a Slant to Running the Rock

Last year, Michigan State was almost perfect in its run-pass ratio. However, they got the most production from running the rock, much the same as Alabama.

This year, just like Alabama, the running game is running like usual and the passing game is picking up. Last week, running back Edwin Baker ran for 183 yards and a TD.

Sounds a lot like Richardson's day at Alabama.

Keeping Up the Dominance over a Home-State Rival

Just like Alabama is once again stretching its lead over in-state rival Auburn, Michigan State is hoping to continue its recent dominance over Michigan.

This not only helps with recruiting, but in fanbase pride. Just like Nick Saban sent many coaches to the unemployment line, the Spartans are hoping to do the same to Rich Rodriguez.

Replacement Questions

Just like Alabama, State was wondering how the replacements would work out.

But just like at Alabama, it seems they're doing just fine.

Alabama lost Ingram to a knee problem, but he is returning. State lost running back Larry Caper to a hand injury, but likewise, his replacement did well.

Like Ingram, Caper is also returning.

Having both top running backs means that both teams will only do better than before.

Michigan State Has a Javier Arenas-Type Player

Last week, Spartan receiver Keshawn Martin pulled in a 42-yard pass, ran a punt back 47 yards, and a kickoff back for another 46 yards. He finished the day with over 200 all-purpose yards.

The coach did, however, prevent him from leading the band at halftime and cooking hamburgers for the concession stands before the game.

The Saban Connection

Saban started his head coaching career at Michigan State, and now he's at Alabama. OK, that's a stretch.

But it was worth reminding the Alabama fans.
