Arsenal Keeping Conundrum: Should Lukasz Fabianski Start Against Braga?

Callum D'SouzaSep 15, 2010

Arsenal will encounter their first Champions League match of 2010/2011 tonight when they face Portuguese champions Sporting Braga. Braga are a fast, attacking side capable of causing a massive upset given the chance.

The Gunners have a tendency to perform better in Europe due to the lesser physicality shown by European teams. Manager Arsene Wenger has a heavy injury list already despite the tenderness of the season, the Frenchman is set to be without Thomas Vermaelen, Robin van Persie, Abou Diaby, Theo Walcott, and Nicklas Bendtner for the Braga clash.

However it is the keeper position that comes under thought. To much annoyance of the Arsenal fans this summer, Wenger failed to secure the signing of a quality keeper despite the poor form shown by his main keepers Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski in recent seasons.

Fortunately Wenger's inability to sign is yet to cost him as of yet with Spaniard Almunia performing solidly in the opening exchanges. Almunia has had no glaring errors to date this season despite his poor track record.

Deputy Lukasz Fabianski endured a poor preseason, yet received an opportunity this season, which sparks the question should the Polish shot stopper be given a start tonight against Sporting Braga?

Braga are predominantly a South American team boasting a fast paced attack. Although the Gunners stand as easy winners, complacency could hurt them and Wenger will be eager to pursue a strong start to Group H.

It would be tough to drop the inform Manuel Almunia but as the Arsenal faithful would know, the former Celtico Vigo keeper fails to keep consistency. Fabianski is still young thus enabling the Polish international to develop and cure his current woes. Should Lukasz Fabianski start tonight?
