Reggie Bush Returns Heisman; Cynical USC Trojan Fans Simply Smirk

Breaking news from ESPN.com has Reggie Bush, the recipient of the 2005 Heisman Trophy, reluctantly returning his award after months of hedging on the subject.

Bush, whose receipt of improper gifts led to USC's recent harsh penalties from the NCAA, had gone on record before as saying he "would let the story play out" regarding recent reports that the Heisman Trophy trust would soon demand that he return the award after the NCAA determined that he was ineligible to play in his award winning season.

Now appears that story has indeed played out.

For some, it might appear that Bush is taking the high road by returning the trophy before its return is requested by the trust.

But for others, perhaps more cynical and definitely more realistic, the Bush is less magnanimous and more succumbing to the inevitable.

Earlier today, the Heisman Trophy trust met to discuss their monthly business.

Speculation has it that at that meeting, a decision was made to formally ask Bush to relinquish the trophy that he should have never been eligible to win in the first place.

Shortly thereafter, it is surmised, a phone call was placed to Bush informing him of the results of that little get together.

Some time after that, Bush formally released a statement saying he would return the trophy.

Part of the Bush statement read as follows, "For the rest of my days, I will continue to strive to demonstrate through my actions and words that I was deserving of the confidence placed in me by the Heisman Trophy Trust."

Really Reggie?

While the university Bush claims to love twists in the wind, shackled by the punishments he was responsible for, the discredited running back continues to play the victim.

In so many ways, Reggie Bush turned his back on the university who gave him the opportunity to showcase his talents into NFL millions.

From not keeping his word to the convicted felon who facilitated his NCAA rule breaking, to not cooperating with the investigation that ensued, Bush has done everything possible to damage USC.

Now, out of the goodness of his heart, and with only the good name of the Heisman Trophy in mind, Bush sadly returns the honor.

Yeah, right.

Forgive Trojan fans if they grin at his grief.

They know that the only legacy Reggie Bush has left the university is one of disgrace.

At least now those same fans can take comfort that some form of justice has been meted out to the villain that caused all of their heartache.

While you pack your trophy for return, that low rumble you hear in the distance is the collective chuckle of Trojan nation.

And that smirk you see on Trojan fans faces is a visual reminder that payback is a bitch Reggie.
