Chris Rainey the Latest Florida Gators Football Player In Trouble

Adam FromalSep 14, 2010

Chris Rainey, a wide receiver for the Florida Gators, was released from jail this afternoon after spending the morning behind bars.

The story of his arrest is as follows.

The 22-year-old from Lakeland was exchanging text messages with an unidentified woman, a person that he had been dating for some periods of time over a three year span.

On Monday night, Rainey showed up outside of the woman's place of residence around 11:00 p.m. and told her that he would break in through the window. The woman came out to talk to Rainey, told him to leave, and then went back inside.

Rainey however did not leave and continued to text her until the police arrived. An example text, sent at 12:22 a.m., read "Time to Die [expletive] u and ur???"

The arrest report states that when police arrived, Rainey, on the other end of a phone call said "Wait and see what happens when they leave," a statement that he denies ever uttering.

As Florida offensive coordinator Steve Addazio said, "Chris Rainey is not a part of our team right now." This is a direct consequence of the felony charges of stalking that the wide receiver now faces.

Rainey is at least temporarily off the team, but is still being represented in court by Mickey Marotti, the Gator's director of strength and conditioning. He has been ordered to have no contact with the woman and to remain home from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. except for school functions or work.

The wide receiver is just the latest Florida Gator to get into some trouble.

Brandon Spikes, a former Gator, has run into trouble numerous times. Once he attempted to gouge out Georgia running back Washaun Ealey's eyes. Head coach Urban Meyer simply didn't take action, asking Spikes to suspend himself for one game. That one game just happened to be an easy victory over Vanderbilt.

Carlos Dunlap last season was charged with a DUI, found unconscious and laying against his steering wheel. He was simply suspended for one game and then allowed to play in the Sugar Bowl.

Other SEC schools and schools around the country in general are having trouble keeping their players in line. Just look at the recent rash of run ins with the law that the University of Georgia has seen. At some point these schools need to start taking accountability for their players' actions.

Rainey is just the latest in a long line of Florida Gators who have gotten into trouble. Let's hope that he is the last.
