2010's Top 25 College Football Recruits: Which Ones Are Making an Impact?

Michael PintoSep 14, 2010

We're a couple of weeks into the 2010 college football season, and depth charts have begun to settle, at least for the time being.

Lets take a look at how the top 25 recruits from the 2010 recruiting class are doing, and see where everyone is on the depth chart.

Some guys have already made their mark, like Marcus Lattimore and Keenan Allen, while others remain stuck on the bench behind upperclassmen.

Here's the stock report on the top 25 prospects from this year's class. We'll revisit this list in a few weeks.

25. Matt Elam, S, Florida

Matt Elam, ranked as the No. 2 safety on both Scout and Rivals, has seen a little bit of action in the first couple weeks of the year, serving as the primary backup to starting safety Will Hill.

Elam has six tackles on the year and has done a good job in pass coverage when the ball comes his way.

He was expected to make a bigger impact as a return man, but so far has one punt return for zero yards.

24. Markeith Ambles, WR, USC

USC's wide receiver corps is crowded, so it's been difficult for a couple of the Trojans top recruits to see the field.

Ambles was the least heralded of USC's three 5-star wide receivers from the 2010 class, but he's sitting middle of the pack right now.

Ambles is senior receiver Ronald Johnson's primary backup and while he hasn't recorded a reception yet, he did see a little action against Hawaii.

23. DeMarcus Milliner, CB, Alabama

Milliner might have been better suited redshirting in 2010, because it seems he'll have a difficult time making his way onto the field.

Rated as the No. 1 cornerback of the class on Scout and the No. 2 cornerback on Rivals, Milliner is expected to see some time in nickelback packages this year, but he's still learning the position.

Right now he's third on the depth chart at right cornerback behind DeQuan Menzie and B.J. Scott. It doesn't look like that's a position he'll escape from anytime soon.

22. Shon Coleman, OT, Auburn

Shone Coleman was ranked as the No. 3 offensive tackle on Rivals and the No. 7 offensive tackle on Scout.

One of the premier players of Auburn's 2010 recruiting class, Coleman was diagnosed with leukemia and began chemotherapy in March.

His mother reported in mid-April that Coleman's latest test results detected no cancer cells. Obviously, at this point, football is far removed from importance; let's just hope Coleman regains his health.

21. William Gholston, DE, Michigan State

5 of 25

William Gholston was ranked as a top-five defensive end on both Scout and Rivals, and could be in line for a big season in his first year with the Spartans.

Currently, Gholston is second on the depth chart at right end behind sophomore Tyler Hoover.

Gholston has registered four tackles on the year, three of them coming in last week's win over Florida Atlantic. Once he gets more comfortable, expect him to make a much bigger impact.

20. Christian Jones, OLB, Florida State

6 of 25

Ranked as the No. 2 outside linebacker on Rivals and the No. 5 outside linebacker on Scout, Jones was part of a great defensive class for the Seminoles.

He has yet to make to make his mark, currently second on the depth chart behind Mister Alexander. Alexander was one of the team's most improved players in the summer.

While a recent arrest brought his availability into question, Mister still took the field ahead of Jones against Oklahoma. Jones finished the contest with three tackles.

19. Spencer Ware, ATH, LSU

7 of 25

The No. 3 athlete of the 2010 class on Rivals and the No. 10 running back, Ware made his home at running back where most experts believed he would land.

The position is a crowded one for the Tigers though, and Ware is fourth or fifth on the depth chart right now.

He was out-shined by fellow freshman back Alfred Blue against Vanderbilt and finished the game with one carry for eight yards and one catch for 24 yards, his only action of the year so far.

18. Chris Martin, DE, Florida (Cal)

8 of 25

Martin was ranked as the No. 2 strong-side defensive end on Rivals and the No. 1 outside linebacker on Scout.

He originally signed Cal, but transferred to Florida this summer to get away from distractions at home.

Martin will have to sit out a year before he is eligible to play again.

17. Dillon Baxter, RB, USC

Dillon Baxter, rated as the No. 1 all-purpose back on Rivals and the No. 5 running back on Scout, saw his first action of the season in Week 2 after serving a one-game suspension for violating team policy.

He didn't disappoint either, taking nine carries for 49 yards and two receptions for eight yards.

Right now, he's technically buried on the depth chart, but after that performance, expect him to get a lot more work going forward.

16. Jordan Hicks, LB, Texas

10 of 25

Jordan Hicks finds himself in a crowded linebacker corps at Texas, but the top-rated linebacker from the 2010 recruiting class has the talent to break through and eventually make a difference.

Hicks is second behind Keenan Robinson on the depth chart, but that's not such a bad thing considering he's the only freshman linebacker that even shows up on the chart at all.

To this point he hasn't done anything, but expect that to change as the year goes on and injuries take their toll.

15. Latwan Anderson, ATH, Miami

11 of 25

Latwan Anderson was the No. 9 ranked safety on Scout and the No. 2 athlete on Rivals. The versatile playmaker who also stars on the track field wasn't cleared by the NCAA until August.

That's put him behind the game at the moment and off the depth chart.

But expect Anderson to get into game form soon and once he starts to figure things out, he should find his way onto the field.

14. Lamarcus Joyner, DB, Florida State

12 of 25

Lamarcus Joyner was ranked as the top cornerback of the 2010 class by Rivals and the the No. 2 cornerback by Scout.

He's second on the depth chart at FSU behind redshirt freshman Xavier Rhodes, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him take a starting cornerback position before the end of year.

Joyner has recorded three tackles in each of the Seminoles first two games, with a pass defended against Samford.

13. Robert Crisp, OT, N.C. State

13 of 25

Crisp was expected to start for the Wolfpack, considering how depleted their offensive line was. But after an average summer, he wasn't able to convince the coaching staff he belonged with the starters.

A top-five offensive tackle on both Scout and Rivals, Crisp is currently second on the depth chart at left tackle behind senior Jake Vermiglio.

If Verniglio struggles at any point this year, expect Crisp to make a quick entrance into the starting lineup.

12. Jackson Jeffcoat, DE, Texas

14 of 25

Another part of Texas' huge haul of defensive talent, Jackson Jeffcoat was ranked as the No. 2 defensive end on Scout and the No. 1 strong-side defensive end on Rivals.

Jeffcoat is currently behind Eddie Jones on the depth chart, and while he should get some playing time as the year goes on—he's still learning the ropes at the moment.

With Jones and Sam Acho firmly planted as the starters, Jeffcoat will have to wait his turn with the Longhorns.

11. Michael Dyer, RB, Auburn

15 of 25

Dyer, ranked as the No. 1 running back of the 2010 recruiting class, may be third on the depth chart at Auburn, but the Tigers have done a great job of involving him in the first couple weeks of the seasons.

Dyer had a huge game in Week 1, rushing for 95 yards and a touchdown. He followed that up with a nine-carry, 48-yard performance against Mississippi State in Week 2.

With Mario Fannin and Onterio McCalebb in front of him, don't expect Dyer to really break loose anytime soon.

10. Marcus Lattimore, RB, South Carolina

Marcus Lattimore is playing better than any freshman in the country and looks like the next star college football running back.

The top running back from the the 2010 recruiting class has already proven his worth, and has the starting running back position at South Carolina on lockdown.

Lattimore opened the year with 75 total yards and two touchdowns against Southern Miss, and then exploded for 182 yards and another two scores off 37 carries against Georgia in Week 2.

9. Da'Rick Rogers, WR, Tennessee

17 of 25

Da'Rick Rogers caught headlines for all the wrong reasons this summer. He was involved in an ugly brawl that saw one police officer injured and a few Vols in handcuffs.

He was suspended by the team and the case still hasn't been resolved. If not for all that, he might have been one of the top impact freshman, but his time off saw him drop way down the depth chart.

For the year, he has one catch for 21 yards, which came in garbage time in a 48-13 loss to Oregon.

8. Owamagbe Odighizuwa, DE, UCLA

18 of 25

Owamagbe Odighizuwa was one of the top-overall prospects from the 2010 class and UCLA's headliner recruit.

He hasn't gotten off to a quick start, though, and has struggled to pick up the speed of the game at the college level.

Right now, he's third on the depth chart at weak-side end, and that seems to be where he'll be until further notice.

7. Dominique Easley, DT, Florida

19 of 25

Dominique Easley was the ranked as the No. 2 defensive tackle by both Scout and Rivals, and joins Sharrif Floyd and Ronald Powell to form the backbone of the Gators' 2010 recruiting class.

Easley is third on the depth chart behind Jaye Howard and Terron Sanders. He'll have to wait his turn and be the good solider before he can make any kind of impact.

Expect him to find his way onto the field for limited minutes throughout the year, but nothing significant without serious injuries ahead of him.

6. Robert Woods, WR, USC

20 of 25

Robert Woods ranked as the No. 1 receiver on Scout and the No. 2 receiver on Rivals. He came to USC with fellow 5-star wide receivers Kyle Prater and Markeith Ambles.

Of the three, he's had the most success, securing a starting spot opposite senior Ronald Johnson.

Woods has seven catches for 110 yards through the first two games of the year and already has the look of a star in the making.

5. Keenan Allen, S, Cal

21 of 25

Keenan Allen was the top-ranked safety of the 2010 recruiting class, but he's made his impact on the other side of the field to open up his college career.

Allen earned as starting spot at wide receiver after making the switch this summer, and he looks right at home catching balls rather than defending them.

Allen has 10 catches for 186 yards and two touchdowns through two games and is on his way to being one of the best impact freshman in the country.

4. Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida

22 of 25

The No. 1 defensive tackle from the 2010 recruiting class, Sharrif Floyd is far from making his mark on the college football stage.

He was expected to make a major impact as a freshman, but to this point has struggled to keep up with the competition and that's seen him buried deep on the depth chart.

It doesn't look like Floyd is going to get much playing time this season unless he gets a whole lot more comfortable in the trenches.

3. Kyle Prater, WR, USC

23 of 25

Prater, ranked as the No. 1 wide receiver on Rivals and the No. 2 wide receiver on Scout, was expected to be a huge contributor for USC this season, but that hasn't worked out yet.

He's buried on the depth chart, and seems to have fallen behind fellow 2010 recruits Robert Woods and Markeith Ambles.

Prater has yet to record a catch, and it looks like he might have to wait awhile for his turn to get on the field.

2. Seantrel Henderson, OT, Miami

24 of 25

Considered by some to be the top recruit of the 2010 class, Seantrel Henderson was caught in the headlines all summer as he was released from his letter of intent at USC and then signed with Miami.

WIth a couple of key losses at offensive tackle in the offseason, Henderson was expected to jump right in and start, but the Hurricanes are brining him along slowly.

Expect him to take the starting right tackle spot from Joel Figueroa if the senior begins to struggle at any point this season.

1. Ronald Powell, DE, Florida

25 of 25

Ronald Powell, the top overall recruit from the 2010 class, is technically fourth on the depth chart at strong-side defensive end behind Duke Lemmens, WIlliam Green, and Lerentee McCray, but he's got way too much talent to be there for long.

Expect Powell to climb up the charts as the season progresses, and eventually be a regular part of the rotation along the defensive line.

For the year he only has a couple of tackles, but once he get the chance to show off his skills on the field, that will change in a hurry.
