College Football: The Top Performers Of Week 2
It was certainly a college slate that made even the most fairweather fan foam at the mouth this past weekend, and the performances were just as great as some of the games.
This week was a tough one to pick the top five performers as there were certainly a number of players that stepped it up in big games.
Selections are based on the best performances in games that meant the most in the college football landscape, so sorry teams like TCU that played Tennessee Tech.
Denard Robinson
1 of 6
We will start with an obvious choice, Denard Robinson, who is leading the NCAA in rushing after two weeks, and isn't even a running back.
Last week he once again single handedly led the Michigan offense in their amazing last minute victory in South Bend.
This time Robinson ran for an impressive 258 yards and two scores, while passing for 244 yards and a score. Now my math may be a little off these days, but I am pretty sure that adds up to over 500 yards of total offense.
Pretty good for a kid from Deerfield Beach, Florida as he has moved himself into early Heisman consideration, and may stay there if the Wolverines can stay relevant in the Big 10.
Marcus Lattimore
2 of 6
The Gamecocks appear to have finally solved their issues with a running game that has cost them in several key SEC games over the past several years.
This weekend SC was ready when Georgia came to town because highly touted running back Marcus Lattimore was ready to prove his worth, and boy did he.
Lattimore was a battering ram as he went for 182 yards on a whopping 37 carries and scored both Gamecock touchdowns in their 17-6 victory.
Expect more of the same from him and the Gamecocks as they inch their way closer to a spot in the SEC title game.
Landry Jones
3 of 6
After the opener many people wrote off both the Sooners and Landry Jones. But after this past Saturday the Sooners and Jones are back at the top of BCS and Heisman lists.
In a showdown game that matched the Seminoles of Florida State and the Sooners, Jones went off throwing for 380 yards and 4 TDs in Oklahoma's 47-17 rout of the 'Noles.
The key for Jones in this one is that he managed to not turn the ball over. If he and the Sooners can continue with this trend, look out Big 12 and the BCS...
Jermaine Kearse
4 of 6
All the talk in the Pacific Northwest has been centered on Jake Locker and him being the best QB heading towards the NFL draft of 2011. After Saturday he may have found a running mate on his campaign run.
Jermaine Kearse blew up in a big way, and all over the Syracuse defense. Kearse had nine catches for 179 yards and a career-high three touchdown grabs in the Huskies' 41-20 victory.
Look for more games like this from Kearse, who now has solidified his spot as Locker's go-to-guy.
Dante Warren
5 of 6
Our final entry is not even from an FBS school. This one comes from the Coyotes of South Dakota in their stunning upset win over Minnesota at the bank.
Dante Warren led charge, throwing for 352 yards and three scores, while rushing for 80+ yards and two more. Simply put, Warren was the best player on the field Saturday and deserves to be a candidate for the FBS player of the weak.
Other Notables
6 of 6
There were also some other top performances that should be noted.
Ryan Mallett threw for 400 yards and three TDs in Arkansas' 31-7 win over ULM.
Colin Kaepernick showed once again why he may be the best dual threat QB West of the Mississippi as he ran for 161 and threw for 241 in the Wolfpack's 51-6 execution of Colorado State.
Houston running back Bryce Beall ran for 195 yards and three scores as Houston took revenge on UTEP on a Friday night ESPN'r.
So there are my picks for players of the week.
I am sure that Terrelle Pryor, some Bama guys, and a few others will be disputed, so as always feel free to post your top five below and check back next week for Week 3's top performances.
