2010 College Football: The Top Freshman Performances of Week Two
There were some solid freshman performances in Week 2, but no one took the nation's attention quite like Marcus Lattimore of South Carolina.
The former 5-star back was the highlight of the Gamecocks 2010 recruiting class and to this point has proven the hype true.
He blew up against a tough Georgia defense on Saturday and has many talking him up as the top freshman in the country.
But we're a long way from those honors and a ton football remains to be played.
Here are some of the top freshman performances from Week 2.
Keenan Allen, WR, Cal
1 of 7
Keenan Allen, the 2010 5-star safety recruit that's made a home at wide receiver, didn't have quite the performance he did in Week 1, but he still put up a solid showing in Week 2.
Allen caught six passes for 66 yards and a touchdown, adding another six yards on the ground in Cal's 52-7 victory over Colorado.
Allen is averaging over 100 total yards a game through the first two weeks of the season and should be in line for more success against Nevada next week.
Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M
2 of 7
Damontre Moore might not have been highly regarded coming out of high school, but the former 3-star defensive end is already making a name for himself with Texas A&M.
Moore didn't start in the Aggies Week 2 matchup with Louisiana Tech, but that didn't stop him from having seven tackles, two sacks, three forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.
That's the type of playmaking ability that will get him in the starting lineup in a hurry.
Nathan Scheelhaase, QB, Illinois
3 of 7
Nathan Scheelhaase had a rough start against Missouri in week one, but Illinois' freshman quarterback came back in a big way against Southern Illinois.
His 229-yard performance with two touchdowns and nearly 78 percent accuracy was the highlight of Illinois' 35-3 victory and earned him Big 10 Freshman Player of the Week honors.
Scheelhaase isn't a player receiving too much interest right now, but if he keeps playing like this, the national attention will quickly turn his way.
Taylor Martinez, QB, Nebraska
4 of 7
Taylor Martinez continued his hot start under center for the Cornhuskers, following up his impressive performance in week one with an almost as impressive stat line in week two.
Martinez was 12-17 for 106 yards, adding 157 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
Western Kentucky and Idaho aren't exactly the toughest competition, but things should get a notch or two more difficult in Week 3 against Washington.
Henry Josey, RB, Missouri
5 of 7
After getting just one carry in Missouri's Week 1 win over Illinois, Henry Josey ran wild in the Tigers' Week 2 blowout win over McNeese State.
Henry received only seven carries, but took those for a whopping 112 yards, scoring three touchdowns.
He became the first freshman in school history to rush for over 100 yards and find the endzone three times since Corby Jones in 1995.
Ronnie Hillman, RB, San Diego State
6 of 7
Ronnie Hillman got the hype machine rolling in Week 1, but it's running at full steam after his Week 2 performance.
After a pedestrian first half in San Diego State's victory over New Mexico State, HIllman went off in the second half.
On the opening play of the half he took the ball 44 yards to the end zone, then scored three more times before the game was over. All in all, Hillman finished the contest with 150 yards off 22 attempts with four touchdowns.
Marcus Lattimore, RB, South Carolina
7 of 7
Marcus Lattimore's performance against Georgia not only earned him SEC Freshman of the Week honors, but Co-Player of the Week honors alongside Trent Richardson of Alabama.
That's some good company and it looks like Lattimore is on his way to joining him as one of the nation's top running backs.
Lattimore had 37 carries for 182 yards and two touchdowns against an underrated Georgia defense that had a ton of it's focus on him. Lattimore is on course to be the top freshman in the nation this season.
