The Week 2 BCS Report: Alabama and Ohio State Take Care Of Business
The big story of the second week of the college football season was the upset loss of Virginia Tech by James Madison. This loss made everyone talk about Boise State, who beat Virginia Tech in a great Monday night game to cap the first week of the season.
When there is an end of the season playoff then who you play in the regular season means very little. The BCS makes the regular season so vital to determine who makes it into the lone playoff game that these discussions take place the entire season.
Virginia Tech is 0-2 this season but they have yet to play an ACC game. The ACC looks to be every bit as bad as they were last year so the Hokies still have a chance to be a BCS team. If the Hokies do win the ACC, which I have as the seventh best conference in the country, the question is out there as to how that helps Boise State.
All Boise State and TCU can do is play the schedule they have in front of them. The BCS will allow for an SEC, Big 10 and even a Pac-10 team to play in the one game playoff for the National Title over and undefeated Mountain West or WAC team.
The BCS did not count on the ACC and Big East being such awful leagues. The BCS has made allowances for this by adding another BCS Bowl Game. The BCS also has been hurt by the decline of the Notre Dame football program. Notre Dame was supposed to be the BCS buster most of the time but other programs in those mid-major conferences have surpassed the Fighting Irish.
Now, that game between Michigan and Notre Dame was really fun to watch. Denard Robinson is running the spread for Rich Rodriguez better than even Pat White did when he coached at West Virginia. It was also very cool to see Nate Montana under center for Notre Dame.
Ohio State had some serious issues on special teams as Miami took advantage for two return touchdowns. Jacory Harris threw four interceptions on the road and that really hurt the Hurricanes. Two were not his fault but the one that Cameron Heyward grabbed on the goal line turned the game in favor of the Buckeyes.
Alabama ate up the freshman quarterback of Penn State in another inter-sectional game. Oklahoma looked really tough as they dismantled Florida State. Oregon shook off a tough start before they wiped the field with Tennessee.
In an SEC tilt, South Carolina beat Georgia in what was a big game for Steve Spurrier's career as the Gamecock leader.

Week 3 Preview
Air Force really took it to BYU and they take that momentum into a game with Oklahoma.
Arizona hosts Iowa in what could actually be a Rose Bowl preview.
Usually Florida and Tennessee is a big game but the Volunteers look to be down this year.
We can gauge where Arkansas is at in their game against Georgia.
A good team from the ACC in Miami plays a good team from the Big East in Pittsburgh so we can find out which league is worse for a week.
One Final Thought...
With a 12 point lead, a first and goal and under two minutes to play, Ohio State went into the victory formation. It is not glamorous to show good sportsmanship.
It is important though.
At the end of the day, there must be respect shown to your opponent because without that opponent there simply is not athletic competition.
Kudos to Jim Tressel for showing class at the end of a decided game and showing that Miami played a great game by refusing to go for one last score.
