Nick O'Leary: Jack Nicklaus' Grandson Suspended After Obscene Gesture
Nick O'Leary, one of the top tight ends in the country and the grandson of golf legend Jack Nicklaus, will sit out the next two games after being suspended by Florida officials after making an obscene gesture toward the stands following a game against Cleveland's Glenville High on Monday.
O'Leary is ranked as the No. 1 prospect at his position by Rivals and No. 2 by Scout.
He faced as much as a six-week suspension for an "unsportsmanlike act," said the Florida High School Athletic Association.
After the controversial game, which Glenville won 26-22, O'Leary was caught on camera making the gesture toward the stands. He was later disciplined by Dwyer coach Jack Daniels but was not suspended by the team.
That may have prompted the FHSAA to hand down a more severe penalty.
The news was first reported by The Palm Beach Post, who caught up with Daniels this week for an interview. Daniels, who obviously disagrees with the ruling, was not afraid to voice his opinion on the matter.
"We think it's a bunch of crap," Daniels said, according to The Palm Beach Post. "There are no repercussions for the adults who made the calls on the field, but there is for an 18-year-old kid who reacted in the heat of the moment.
"You have a kid who has busted his butt since August. He played 140 snaps against Glenville, on both sides, punting and returning kicks. He was frustrated."
Daniels even suggested that Dwyer might forfeit the two games rather than play without O'Leary, but there are no signs that the team actually intends to do so, as it would make them ineligible for postseason play.
