Arizona State Sun Devils Football: Has Steven Threet Broken QB Drought in Tempe?
Although the Arizona State Sun Devils named Steven Threet as the starting quarterback for their season opener, Brock Osweiler also received playing time.
The two quarterbacks were involved in a very close quarterback battle all offseason, with Threet finally prevailing.
Although Osweiler’s performance was good, Threet proved he deserves to be the starter, and that the quarterback controversy in Tempe is over.
Some early drops hindered Threet’s numbers, but he still finished 14-of-21 for 239 yards and two touchdowns.
The Michigan transfer also had three rushes for 24 yards and showed command of the offense.
Threet struggled in the spring game, but has come a long way as the Sun Devil’s quarterback. He admitted to the Daily Star Telegram he is now more comfortable in the Sun Devil offense.
“I feel like I’m in an offense that is one that I fit well in with my skill set," said Threet. "Obviously it has taken a little time (to get adjusted) and obviously I will be more comfortable.”
While there were a few bumps in the road, including one interception thrown by Threet, the quarterback will surely gain confidence and comfort as the season progresses.
Quarterbacks, perhaps more than any other position in football, need experience and repetition to get better. As the season goes on, Threet will have more time to get used to running the ASU offense in game situations as well as have more time to mesh with his receivers.
Steven Threet has solved the quarterback controversy in Tempe, and Sun Devil fans should be ready to watch Threet start in both 2010 and 2011.
