College Football's Six Newest Household Names
Once again, the first week of the college football season brought more than advertised.
With its fair share of close games and upset victories, Week 1 of the college football season is in the books and without question left us with some new names to throw around.
Relative unknowns burst onto the scene over the weekend and showed that 2010 is their year. No matter the position or the team, these players are ready to step up this season.
Here are some of college football's newest household names that everyone will need to get used to not only this season, but for years to come.
Jheranie Boyd
1 of 6
In the wake of suspensions of about half of the North Carolina starting lineup, sophomore wide receiver Jheranie Boyd stepped up in a big way.
Boyd almost singlehandedly led the Tar Heels on an improbable comeback against LSU and finished the game with six catches for 221 yards and two touchdowns, including a 97-yard scamper that started the furious North Carolina comeback.
As a relative unknown a season ago as a freshman, Boyd finished with only 12 catches for 214 yards and four touchdowns. Its a safe bet he will shatter those numbers in 2010 and become a household name not only in the ACC, but across the entire nation as well.
Jordan Wynn
2 of 6
Utah sophomore quarterback Jordan Wynn was nothing short of impressive in the Utes' season-opening overtime victory against Pittsburgh.
Wynn finished the game with 283 yards on 21-of-36 passing to go along with three touchdowns and only one interception against a very highly touted Pittsburgh defense.
After seeing limited action last season as a freshman, Wynn is poised for a breakout season in 2010 and could be the catalyst behind a Utah team ready to surprise some people in the Mountain West and nationally.
Dominique Davis
3 of 6
In a thrilling 51-49 victory over Tulsa, East Carolina junior quarterback Dominique Davis may have had the biggest day of any player in the country in Week 1.
Davis finished the game completing 27 of 46 passes for 383 yards and five touchdowns with one interception. He also totaled one touchdown on the ground.
After starting his career at Boston College, Davis is now the man for the Pirates, and playing in the high-flying world of Conference USA, he could put up astronomical numbers in 2010.
Kenjon Barner
4 of 6
When LeGarrette Blount was suspended last season, many wondered what would happen to the Oregon running game. Freshman LaMichael James stepped in, and Blount was soon forgotten.
Well, with James suspended in Week 1 this season, sophomore Kenjon Barner stepped in and had the game of his life against New Mexico.
Barner was explosive, finishing the game with 147 yards on only 17 carries and four touchdowns. Throw in a 60-yard touchdown reception and Barner finished with five touchdowns.
The funny thing is, by then it was only halftime.
Barner averaged six yards a carry in limited action last season, but he will definitely see more touches in 2010.
Cameron Newton
5 of 6
After throwing only six passes in his first two collegiate seasons, junior quarterback Cameron Newton shined in the season opener against Arkansas State.
Newton finished the game 9-of-14 passing for 186 yards and three touchdowns. Couple that with 171 yards rushing on 15 carries and two touchdowns, and Newton is in the Heisman conversation after the opening weekend.
At 6'6" and 250 pounds, Newton is a load for any defensive back to tackle in the open field and could lead Auburn to a big 2010 campaign.
Denard Robinson
6 of 6
Michigan sophomore quarterback Denard Robinson made Connecticut look silly on Saturday with both his feet and his arm.
Robinson was 19-of-22 passing for 186 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, Robinson carried the ball 29 times for 197 yards and another score.
He singlehandedly produced nearly 400 yards of total offense and has made people turn their heads and wonder if this Michigan team is for real in 2010.
Robinson's breakout performance tops the list for Week 1. Denard Robinson will be a household name in Big Ten country and across the nation in 2010 and beyond.
