The Week 1 BCS Report: Boise State and TCU Survive and Advance

Dan SmithSep 7, 2010

When you are not in a BCS conference, like Boise State and TCU, every regular season game is a playoff game. Alabama, in the tough SEC, can lose a game and still be in contention for the BCS title game, but a loss by Boise State or TCU puts them out of the BCS altogether.

This is a rare season since both Boise State and TCU are already in the top 10, so both have a legitimate chance to be the first non-BCS schools to make it to the BCS title game.

Boise State was pushed by a very good Virginia Tech team in what was essentially a road game for the Broncos. TCU played Oregon State in Dallas Stadium in what was an entertaining game in which the Beavers fell short.

North Carolina had 13 players suspended in their loss to LSU. Watching the LSU Tigers play football, under their coach Les Miles, makes me scratch my head. The team is loaded with talent on both sides of the ball and the only one who can really stop their offense is their own ultra conservative coaching staff.

Then you see Michigan play the exciting spread offense and wonder how the Wolverines got Rich Rodriguez to coach their team when LSU has a Big Ten coach in Les Miles. Miles is also a Michigan man as well.

The Tulsa/East Carolina game had the best finish as both squads ran up and down the field and the team with the ball last had the best chance to win. That turned out to be East Carolina who won on a Hail Mary pass as time expired.

Alabama and Ohio State look like they will be the best teams in what will be the best two conferences this year. Mark Ingram was hurt, so Nick Saban plugged in Trent Richardson. I hope that Jim Tressel does not pull a Les Miles and try to limit his dynamic quarterback Terrelle Pryor.

Now in his junior year, Pryor looks like the best player in college football, and Ohio State looks like the best team since they do not have to run the SEC gauntlet that awaits Alabama.
