Michigan Rocks, Ole Miss Sucks: College Football Week 1 Reaction
Michigan had a good start to the season, Ole Miss didn't. Our reactions to the first week of the college football season...
THUMBS UP
Jacksonville State
Some people might have called this monster upset a dose of karma for Houston Nutt after he brought in Jeremiah Masoli over the summer, but in our view, it was the upset that rescued what was really a very dry first week of college football, where good games were at a premium.
Boise State/Virginia Tech
Speaking of good games, this was one of them. Boise State's last minute comeback against the Hokies in front of a partisan Hokies crowd in Washington DC was fantastic, but really, the game was a fantastic advertisement for college football.
If Ohio State or Alabama lose this year (both are unlikely), then pen the Broncos in for the National Championship Game.
Hawaii
Never gave up in their loss against USC, and if they could have converted some more of the chances the Trojans' dreadful defense gave them (and their starting quarterback hadn't been knocked out because of an illegal hit), then they probably would have had us all laughing at Lane Kiffin.
Michigan
Hate to say this, but Denard Robinson's performance against a fairly strong Connecticut defense showed us that the boy can play. It's a pity—because we liked the fun Tate Forcier, who helped to send Michigan to another terrible season in 2009. Is Michigan back? We'll see against Notre Dame, shall we?
Notre Dame
Purdue fans will say: "If Ralph Bolden was playing, we probably would have won." We love the world of 'ifs'. Notre Dame fans at last have something to sing about again. This, of course, may all change against Michigan....
Alabama
The Crimson Tide sure missed Marcel Dareus and Mark Ingram, didn't they?
UNC
The University of Non-Compliance that they not only have an incredible coach in Butch Davis, but they also have strength in depth. A little bit of luck would have seen them pull of an unlikely victory on Saturday night against the Tigers - despite having only half a team. Anyone need a spare tutor?
Ohio State
One special teams 'moment' aside, Ohio State showed that they are ready to take on the world with a crisp performance against Marshall. This team is the team-to-beat in the Big Ten, people. Make no mistake about it.
ECU/Tulsa
Unbelievable game. We're still trying to get our breath back.
DON'T KNOW WHAT TO THINK
Penn State
We said this before and we'll say it again: if Penn State start as badly as they did against Youngstown State, they'll get trounced in Tuscaloosa on Saturday.
Georgia
Saturday's victory with Aaron Murray sure was a good win for the Bulldogs, but how is he going to perform in front of a wall of hate in Columbia, South Carolina. The 'Dogs will badly need AJ Green back for that game. As a person who thinks he's the best wide receiver (and possibly player) in college football, I sure hope so.
Oklahoma/Texas
Both Oklahoma and Texas were exceptionally underwhelming in their first games, with Oklahoma proving they have a ton of holes in defence and Texas showing that Garrett Gilbert may not be the second coming of Colt McCoy. We can only say this: this is Texas A&M's best chance to win the Big XII South in years.
Oregon
A 72-0 victory means nothing, Ducks fans. But the return of LaMichael James next week? Wow. Oregon could well take home the Pac-10 this year, if they keep injury and stupidity free.
THUMBS DOWN
Ole Miss
We're still laughing, Ole Miss fans.
LSU
Scraping through against a makeshift UNC doesn't exactly bode well for LSU - or Les Miles' - future at the helm in Baton Rouge. Tigers fans can look forward to the 2010 season with trepidation.
USC
Defensively, these guys are horrible. We could see some Pac-10 2009 beatings for this USC side, and because of what happened this summer (we now know what Reggie did!), then 2010 points to being a bit of a horror show for Lane Kiffin's team.
Florida
The Gators' week performance against Miami (Ohio) wasn't exactly welcomed by fans of the blue and orange, and it must be a slightly worrying sight for Florida fans. No fear though, this team's got so much talent that it'll still rule the SEC for years to come (but maybe not this year!).
Big East
Pittsburgh's overtime loss at Utah and Connecticut's blowout loss at Michigan showed that the Big East is going be a weak-assed conference this year come bowl-time. The best news? It could lead to some exceptionally exciting in-conference games, though...
