College Football Rankings: Who Got Screwed in Week 1 Coaches Poll?
With a full slate of games already in the books its time for the first coaches poll of this young college football season.
It's always interesting to see how this poll turns out as coaches sometimes vote along personal and school lines with rivalries drawing lines across the poll.
After looking at the poll, there are some things that I'd change. I've combed through and found ten teams that should have a bit of a gripe after seeing today's coaches poll.
No. 10: Penn State
1 of 10
Penn State came out and did what it was supposed to—pound an inferior opponent in Youngstown State.
The Nittany Lions won 44-14 and look impressive doing it, especially considering they were starting a true freshman in quarterback Robert Bolden.
Bolden was 20/29 for 239 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start.
The special teams, which had been a thorn in Joe Paterno's side all of last year looked much improved and I just really don't like how Oklahoma looked this weekend. I know they won, but how bad they looked can't be forgotten.
No. 9: Nebraska
2 of 10
It's not a huge gripe, but I think Nebraska should be above Florida in the polls. The Gators didn't look great in their victory over Miami of Ohio this weekend and the transition away from Tim Tebow is going to take some time.
Florida is replacing a lot and it showed while Nebraska took care of business this weekend and just looked like a better team last week.
I know that the Gators won and you cannot penalize a team for that, but I think the Cornhuskers deserved to be one slot higher in this week's poll.
We'll see how correct I am in the coming weeks, because Florida will get into the meat of its schedule while we may have to wait a little bit longer to find out if Nebraska is for real or not.
No. 8: Florida State
3 of 10
The Jimbo Fisher era got underway with a bang as the Seminoles trounced Samford 59-6 this weekend.
Yeah, it's Samford, but Florida State looked speedy and dangerous this weekend, and could earn a ranking that people questioned a little bit at the beginning of the season.
Florida State is currently at 18 and honestly, that's where I'd have LSU. The Tigers should have beaten North Carolina by at least three touchdowns considering the circumstances surrounding the Tar Heels coming into the game.
When you are suspending huge chunks of your team, you should take advantage of that. The Tigers didn't and should have been penalized for that.
No. 7: Wisconsin
4 of 10
While the Badgers weren't impressive at all this week, they were still more impressive than Oklahoma.
The Sooners were completely brutal this weekend and barely beat Utah State. I never thought I'd ever say that Oklahoma struggled to beat Utah State.
I know they're trying to work in a new quarterback and transition from the Sam Bradford era but the Sooners should be better than that.
Wisconsin beat UNLV by 20 and probably should have beaten them by more. I'd like to chalk it up to it being the first week and cruising against a fluff opponent but either way, they should be above Oklahoma in the polls.
No. 6: Utah
5 of 10
I'm not exactly sure how Utah ended up below Auburn in the rankings this week. Prior to this weekend the Utes were a spot below the Tigers in the poll.
Then Utah went out and upset then—No. 15 Pittsburgh while Auburn beat Arkansas State 52-26. No offense to Arkansas State, but Utah got a quality win early on in the season and the Tigers beat a joke of an opponent and should be above Auburn in the polls.
Utah may run the table if it upsets TCU later in the season and I think they're a better team than Auburn. I see the Tigers finishing somewhere in the middle of the SEC mess while the Utes may play BCS buster once again.
No. 5: Virginia Tech
6 of 10
I know Virginia Tech lost and that always means a drop in the polls, but do they really belong below Wisconsin?
The Badgers didn't look great this weekend and the Hokies hung tough with a team ranked third in the nation.
Regardless of what anyone thinks about Boise State and whether they belong with the big boys and deserve that ranking, the fact of the matter is they had it.
Virginia Tech looked tough on defense and Tyrod Taylor had a good game and didn't deserve to drop all the way down to 13 from six. I'm not a huge Frank Beamer fan, but he's got some good, young players on that squad and they were impressive last night.
No. 4: Georgia Tech
7 of 10
I don't know who LSU is paying for votes, but I don't think there's anyway they should have held steady in the rankings at 16.
LSU is poorly coached, there's no two ways about it. The Tigers need to fire Les Miles and get him out of there.
Miles thought he had the game wrapped up and took his foot off the gas and let North Carolina back into the game. I ripped the Tigers earlier and I'm going to do it again.
To be perfectly honest, LSU should have lost that game and I don't like the Tigers' chances as long as Miles is pulling the strings down there.
Georgia Tech won impressively against a fluff opponent while LSU managed to barely win against a team that was ravaged by suspensions.
It's a joke that the Tigers are above the Yellow Jackets.
No. 3: Texas
8 of 10
I know Texas wasn't the most impressive team in the country when they beat Rice 34-17, but they got the job done with a new starting quarterback. There's something to be said for that.
Boise State had a gutsy, impressive win against Virginia Tech, but I don't believe they deserved to hop the Longhorns in the polls. I feel the fact that the Broncos' victory came at the end of the week had a factor in the voting and drove Texas below Boise State.
I don't believe Texas will compete for a national title like the Broncos have the chance to, but this poll isn't based on what you think about the future and right now Texas should be ranked third, not Boise State.
No. 2: Miami
9 of 10
Miami houses their opponent 49-0 while Wisconsin wins by 20 and the Hurricanes find themselves looking up at the Badgers in the polls. To be honest, that's a load of crap.
Wisconsin didn't impress me that much like I said earlier and I don't think they're a better team than Miami and they should have destroyed UNLV.
The Hurricanes have proven that they are able to play with the big boys since last year, and I they deserve more respect from the coaches than only hopping up one spot in the poll.
It'll be interesting to see how high Miami would hop up in the poll with a win over Ohio State.
No. 1: Oregon
10 of 10
How was Oregon rewarded for its 72-0 thrashing of New Mexico? By only hopping three spots to No. 9.
I feel like the Ducks were the most impressive team in the country last week, regardless of who the opponent was. They certainly looked better than Florida, who struggled mightily at times last week.
I know you can't drop a team far down the list if they won, but the Gators looked bad while Oregon looked dominant. The Ducks also looked better than Nebraska, and I think Oregon is a better team.
I expect to see Oregon continue to climb this poll as the weeks go on.
