Boise State vs. Virginia Tech Football: What a Broncos Win Would Mean
Tonight is the biggest game of this early college football season as Boise State will take on Virginia Tech.
The Broncos are looking to shock a lot of their doubters despite being ranked third in the country. If Boise State wins, it will shake up the college football world and create a lot of possibilities for the Broncos going forward.
We're going to go into our time machine and take a guess at 10 things that will happen if Boise State topples the Hokies tonight in primetime.
#10: Rankings Boost
1 of 10
The Broncos are currently ranked third in the polls and with a win over a quality opponent, Boise State will get a lot more looks from pollsters and coaches.
Now to say they would get bumped over Ohio State would be ludicrous, but if the Buckeyes fall to Miami next week, you better believe that the Broncos would be in line for a top-two slot.
Even more interesting would be if Alabama loses to Penn State as well. Would Boise State be the top team in the country? In my opinion, yes. If they weren't slotted there, it's a travesty.
#9: Virginia Tech Flops Again
2 of 10
There is no more overrated coach in college football than Frank Beamer.
Has there ever been a college coach who's gotten more praise for doing nothing than Beamer and his gimmicky "Beamer Ball"?
Special teams may win games, but they don't win championships and if Boise State wins, it's just another failure by Beamer to get the job done.
Sorry Tech fans, but it's true and deep down you know I'm right.
#8: No Fluke
3 of 10
When Boise State upset Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, a lot of people said it was a fluke win.
Bob Stoops is a horrible coach in bowl games despite his national championship victory and a lot of people think the Sooners overlooked the Broncos and it led to their downfall.
However, if Boise State were able to beat two major BCS conference opponents, it would go a long way towards proving that it's not lightning striking twice and that the Broncos are a national powerhouse.
Even if that happens, Bob Stoops is still a terrible big game coach.
#7: Undefeated Season?
4 of 10
If the Broncos defeat Virginia Tech, there's not much that stands in the way of Boise State running the table.
The only other quality opponent on the schedule is Oregon State and no one else is even a threat to the Broncos.
No one is shaking in their boots when Utah State comes to town, the same goes for Toledo and Wyoming.
The reality is that Boise State's schedule outside of two opponents is a joke and if the Broncos get past those two, there's not much that's stopping them from an undefeated season.
#6: Chris Petersen Moving On?
5 of 10
Despite signing a five-year extension with Boise State this year, I'm not so sure that Chris Petersen is a Bronco for that long.
College football coaches aren't synonymous with loyalty and plenty of coaches have just ignored contracts to move on to greener pastures, scorning fanbases along the way.
If Petersen gets another big time win and another successful season, there's no reason why he should stay in Boise forever.
Imagine what he can do with the resources of a major school.
#5: Bigger Target
6 of 10
There's been a lot of talk about Boise State ever since they cracked the top three in the polls.
With their schedule and two quality opponents, there's been national title talk around the Broncos something that hasn't been around the program in its history.
I worry that Boise State can't handle the pressure and will overlook one of its weaker opponents. Let's be honest, these players aren't of the same pedigree of the bigger schools.
These players aren't used to playing big time games for big time teams and could crack under the lofty expectations.
If Boise State loses to a nobody school, I won't be shocked.
#4: Recruiting Help
7 of 10
Every player wants to contend for a national title and that's what has made Boise State's rise to power so intriguing.
They can't compete with the Florida's, the Miami's and the Ohio State's in terms of recruiting but have managed to field a team that is ranked third in the nation.
If Boise State gets a high profile win on national television and then goes on to have a big season, it will do wonders for the Broncos' national prominence in terms of recruits.
I'd love to see the Broncos stealing recruits from the top schools.
#3: Tougher Opponents
8 of 10
It's taken Boise State forever to get a matchup like this.
The Broncos have tried everything. They even tried to offer to travel to an opponent without a return date to try and beef up their schedule. Nothing worked.
If Boise State wins, it'll go a long way towards helping get tougher opponents on the schedule. With teams like Ohio State and Miami pairing up, there's no reason why a top program wouldn't want to feature the Broncos on their schedule.
Seeing a team like Texas play a Boise State would be must see television.
#2: National Respect
9 of 10
The question of whether or not Boise State belongs being in the national title picture has been a topic of discussion since the Broncos were ranked third in the preseason polls.
Boise State has only one victory of a team in a BCS conference and a victory over TCU last year to its credit and a lot of people think the Broncos are going to be beaten by Virginia Tech to end this charade.
If Boise State wins, the Broncos will start to convert some of the doubters and get some respect from the public. Public perception goes a long way towards getting a national title shot, regardless of how bad the BCS is.
And let's be honest, it's pretty bad.
#1: Title Implications
10 of 10
If Boise State defeats Virginia Tech, it'll be a huge quality victory for a team with an otherwise lackluster schedule.
When it comes down to it, Boise State may have to beat out a couple of other teams for a slot in the national title game.
They won't have played as tough of a schedule as Alabama or Ohio State so Boise State winning will prove to the pollsters that they can compete for a national title and won't be a doormat on the big stage.
I'm dying to see a team like Boise State in the title game. If they won, it would change the entire way we look at college football and in my opinion would give serious creedance to the people clamoring for a playoff.
C'mon powers that be, make it happen.
