Oklahoma Sooners, Florida Gators and 10 Teams Not As Good As We Thought
After Week One of college football, the rankings will inevitably be shuffled since some teams didn't live up to early expectations.
The Florida Gators lost some snaps and fumbled the ball so many times that even their fans grew impatient.
While the Oklahoma Sooners won their game, it was a little too close for comfort.
Both teams were believed to be national title contenders in the preseason, yet they didn't look anything like it.
Here are the 10 teams that aren't as good as we all thought.
10. LSU Tigers
1 of 10
Facing a shorthanded North Carolina team, Les Miles and the LSU Tigers still had problems coming away with the victory, 30-24.
A young and inexperienced secondary was exposed by Tar Heel senior quarterback T.J. Yates, who threw for 412 yards and three TDs, including a 97 yard TD-pass to Jheranie Boyd.
His other two touchdown throws came in the fourth quarter, when North Carolina just fell short of tying the game after LSU had a 30-10 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Tight end Zack Pianalto dropped a game-tying six-yard touchdown catch at the end of the game.
The last time Yates had a game like that was probably in high school. Yates notched a 344 yard passing game back in 2007, during his freshman year at UNC.
With LSU having their young secondary torn up by North Carolina's passing game, it showed that Les Miles clearly still has a lot of work to do with this team and they're not as good as we expected.
9. Texas Longhorns
2 of 10
New starting quarterback Garret Gilbert struggled with consistency in the Longhorns' opener.
Gilbert threw for 172 yards and no touchdowns in the 34-17 Texas victory.
A win is a win, right? But there's reason to be concerned in Austin.
Their opponent, the Rice Owls, allowed a whopping 43.1 ppg last season when they went 2-10. And it's a little disconcerting that Gilbert wasn't able to impose himself on the Owls' defense.
Since Gilbert couldn't find the end zone, Texas relied heavily on their running game. Running back Tre' Newton recorded three TDs.
Here's a fact: Gilbert needs to find himself soon. Otherwise, it may already be time for another McCoy.
8. UCLA Bruins
3 of 10
The Bruins were marked as darkhorse Pac-10 title contenders this season with Kevin Prince maturing at quarterback and the development of wide receiver Nelson Rosario.
Yet they started the season with a loss to a Kansas State team that had a 6-6 record last season.
Things don't look that great in Westwood, not even with Rick Neuheisel in charge. With a Week 1 loss and a stacked Pac-10, the Bruins should just look forward to a .500 record on the season.
7. Kansas Jayhwaks
4 of 10
The Kansas Jayhawks were 1-7 last season against Big 12 opponents but were 4-0 in their out-of-conference matches.
This year with a new head coach, Turner Gill, they were expected to easily dispose of Week 1 opponent, North Dakota State.
But they lost 6-3 to the FCS team in a stunning upset.
For the Jayhawks, their running game only gained 96 yards on 32 carries, 51 yards of which came via a trick play.
Their offense also turned the ball over three times.
6. USC Trojans
5 of 10
USC won and Matt Barkley tied a school record by throwing for five TDs.
Yet the Trojans look like they could be in trouble this season. Why?
Because their defense was atrocious. There were plenty of missed tackles and defensive lapses during their opening game.
The Warriors gained a total of 588 yards, including 459 passing yards, and managed to score 36 points against the Trojans. The young USC secondary allowed three different Hawaii receivers to gain over 100 yards.
5. Ole Miss Rebels
6 of 10
This was a monumental collapse for Ole Miss. With a 31-13 lead halfway through the third quarter, the game inexplicably got away.
Jacksonville State scored in their next six possessions, which included five touchdowns and two key two-point conversions—one to tie the game and take it to overtime, and the other one to win the game in double overtime.
"Without a doubt, it's the worst loss of my career," Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt told the Associated Press, as he lamented his team's first ever loss to an FCS team.
Considering that the Rebels defense fell apart and allowed a total of 49 points to Jacksonville State, Houston Nutt has a lot to think about this week.
How else can they match up against the rest of the SEC?
4. Penn State NIttany Lions
7 of 10
Penn State struggled early but was able to regroup and come away with the win.
After being down to Youngstown State 7-3 after the first quarter, the Nittany Lions ran away with the victory 44-14.
But don't let that fool you, there's reason to to be concerned.
The last time Penn State faced the Penguins in 2006, they won the game with a dominant running game. A running game that was less than impressive in this year's battle.
Evan Royster carried the ball 11 times for 40 yards and no touchdowns, his team only collected 132 total rushing yards and no scores. Whereas four years ago, JoePa's team notched 389 yards and four touchdowns.
Another reason for concern is 18-year-old quarterback Robert Bolden. Bolden looked fine against the Penguins with 239 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT, but tougher competition lies ahead.
With a weak running game and a young QB, JoePa can't just get by this season with sympathy votes.
3. Pittsburgh Panthers
8 of 10
Pitt started the season ranked No. 15 in the preseason by the AP.
They suffered a devastating overtime loss to the Utah Utes to open their season.
The Panthers had troubles finding their offense, who was limited to 184 passing yards and 84 rushing yards by the Utes defense.
Now they've fallen out of the rankings and Utah breaks into the Top 25, at number 20.
One week into the season, Pitt is no longer in the Top 25.
2. Oklahoma Sooners
9 of 10
Despite a Week 1 win against the Utah State Aggies, Oklahoma fell back on the AP poll, from the No. 7 spot to No. 10.
Quarterback Landry Jones threw the ball 36 times and converted only 17 passes. He tallied 217 yards, two TDs, and two interceptions.
The Sooners secondary allowed 341 passing yards from Utah State quarterback Diondre Borel.
They were expected to dominate this Aggies team, who lost eight games last season playing out of the WAC. Instead, the game was close and Utah State lost by only seven points, 31-24.
1. Florida Gators
10 of 10
The Gators were not even close to looking like a national title contender in their season opener.
They fumbled the ball eight times and lost it three times. John Brantley was limited to 113 passing yards for the entire game and his biggest passing gain came in the fourth quarter, a 72-yard pass to Jeff Demps. Their offense also turned the ball over twice on downs.
People are going to get sick of hearing this but the truth is, he's no Tim Tebow.
Florida's title hopes are cloudy-to-uncertain for now.
