College Football Recruiting: 10 Recruits That WILL Switch Schools

Michael PintoSep 1, 2010

Decommitments are as much a part of the college football recruiting game as the actual commitments.

In the case of some, a soft verbal in favor of one team doesn't mean too much. These prospects are still free to take official visits to other schools and can switch their minds at any time.

But even a solid verbal doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things. Other schools will still chase after them and at any point a recruit can decommit.

Until they've signed their letter of intent, its all fair game.

So we've gone through the 2011 class and picked out 10 situations that smell a little fishy. They're the soft verbals that are actively being recruited, the guys discussing visits to other schools, and the names that just don't seem like they're settled with their decision.

Terrance Smith, DE, FSU

1 of 10

FSU's Terrance Smith is the No. 13 outside linebacker on Rivals and the No. 20 defensive end on Scout. He committed to the Seminoles back in March, but while he is a solid verbal, he intends to make visits to other schools before making his official decision.

Along with FSU, Smith lists Alabama as his second choice as well as the possibility that he will visit Clemson and Georgia in the coming months.

Alabama, Georgia, and Clemson are all recruiting him hard in hopes of swaying him and it looks like that scenerio is very possible.

Kellen Jones, LB, Michigan

2 of 10

Kellen Jones is the No. 13 middle linebacker on Scout and pound for pound one of the strongest players in the country.

Jones committed to Michigan at the end of July and while he seemed genuinely excited after his visit to Ann Arbor, the Wolverines were not his top choice.

That would be Stanford.

Just days before his commitment to Michigan, Jones spoke of his desire to play for the Cardinal alongside fellow 2011 recruit James Vaughters, but that Stanford was full at linebacker and wouldn't add anyone else unless there's a decommitment.

If there is, expect Jones to jump on that situation in a hurry.

Frank Shannon, S, Oklahoma

3 of 10

Shannon, Scout's No. 8 safety and Oklahoma commit, isn't sold on the idea of being a Sooner quite yet and plans on making a few more visits before putting any ink to paper.

"I'm gonna take all my official visits. I'll take one to Oklahoma and the others, I'm not sure yet," he said. "LSU is still recruiting me, Cal, UCLA, and Oklahoma State."

Especially when it comes to LSU, Shannon seems intrigued by the possibilites in Baton Rouge.

"LSU,I like the environment down there. I like how the city is and how the school is in the city. It makes me think of home here in Dallas."

Marlin Lane, RB, Clemson

4 of 10

Marlin Lane is the No. 8 ranked running back on both Scout and Rivals, but he isn't the only top 10 back who's committed to Clemson.

He's joined by Mike Bellamy, one of the top five backs from the 2011 class and the headliner of the Tigers class to this point.

Lane committed to Clemson before Bellamy and plans to make all his official visits. Maybe he's just covering his bases, but it seems like he's reconsidering the idea of playing second fiddle.

Miami, FSU, USC, and Auburn are the four schools still recruiting him the hardest and it would appear he could be ready to switch his commitment to any of them.

Brendon Bigelow, RB, Washington

5 of 10

Bigelow is listed as the No. 6 running back on Rivals and the No. 12 running back on Scout. He lost some steam his junior year after a serious knee injury, but now that he's healthy the scouts are going after him hard again.

While he committed to Washington, Bigelow remains a soft verbal and has had a busy few months running around the country.

He attended UCLA's spring game, maintains interest in Miami and Tennessee and holds offers from Notre Dame and Cal as well.

Washington got the early look, but the Huskies might not get the last one when it comes to Bigelow's commitment.

Karlos Williams, S, FSU

6 of 10

5-star safety Karlos Williams is the No. 2 ranked prospect at his position on Rivals and the No. 7 ranked prospect on Scout.

This one might be a little a little unfair to Williams, but you can't help but wonder if his situation will turn out like Matt Elam's.

Elam was one of the top safeties of the 2010 class and flip-flopped between FSU and Florida for months before settling on the Gators.

Williams says he is committed to the Seminoles, but is still "looking around" and there appears to be mutual interest between he and Alabama.

Jeoffrey Pagan, DE, Florida

7 of 10

Pagan is one of the most high-profile soft verbals in the country and the 5-star defensive end plans on making several visits before making anything official.

He looked like a sure-fire commitment to Florida back in April, but things have opened up again since then and now Alabama, Clemson, Tennessee, and Georgia are back in the mix.

It makes sense for Pagan to consider other options considering how great the Gators haul of defensive linemen was in 2010.

The latest on the Pagan front is that Clemson and Georgia are coming on strong; this one stinks of decommitment.

Brent Calloway, LB, Alabama

8 of 10

Brent Calloway is the No. 2 outside linebacker on Rivals and the No. 6 outside linebacker on Scout.

The 5-star prospect committed to Alabama in June, but with another high profile linebacker joining the mix in Trey Depriest and the possible addition of No. 1 overall recruit Jadeveon Clowney, the competition for playing time could be a turnoff.

"I am still receiving a lot of interest from other schools," he said. "USC and all the same ones are still coming at me. Ole Miss, Tennessee, Florida and Florida State are all recruiting me very hard.

"I am going to take my visits. I do plan to take all five of my official visits. I have one trip that’s probably going to shock a lot of people. I am not going to say anything now, but it's pretty soon. You will know the week of a trip where I am going."

De'Anthony Thomas, ATH, USC

9 of 10

De'Anthony Thomas is the soft verbal king of the 2011 recruiting class. He's listed as the No. 1 cornerback on Scout and the No. 2 athlete on Rivals.

He chose USC in May, but changed his tune after the sanctions were announced and now is a self-described soft verbal.

Thomas plans on making some visits this year and wants to keep his options open, possibly including a trip to Washington as well as some other schools.

There's not too much news on this front, but doesn't this situation sound a lot like that of Seantrel Henderson to you?

James Wilder, ATH, FSU

10 of 10

Wilder is one of the top two or three prospects of the 2011 recruiting class and recently announced his commitment to FSU, where he'll compete for a chance to play running back.

If you've followed Wilder's situation then you know that it was reported the day before his announcement that Georgia would be the school.

This came after months of speculation that Florida had the edge and was bound to land him.

Wilder admitted before his commitment that he switched his mind almost daily before settling on FSU. It just seems like another switch is due before this one is settled.
