A Night in Hell: Allegri's Devils Rout Lecce as Ibra Is Unveiled

Tim FontenaultAug 29, 2010

Alexandre Pato inspired a masterful performance by a clearly superior Milan squad, which welcomed Lecce back to Serie A with a 4-0 victory at the San Siro. They are now at the top of the table after Week 1 of the championship.

Milan took advantage of mistakes by fellow top dogs Roma and Juventus, who drew and lost respectively, and will be in first going to Round 2 unless champions Inter Milan make up that +4 goal difference against Bologna on Monday.

Max Allegri began his reign at Milan with a spectacular showing by his club in front of 47,000 very happy Milanista.

Il Diavolo proved that age does not matter as everyone, old and young, competed at a high level.

Ronaldinho continued on the form that he revitalized last season, and was even better at times, creating opportunities and nearly having a goal of his own. He assisted Pato in the first half.

Pato netted the first goal of the season from a difficult angle in the 16th minute. To that point, Lecce had seemed comfortable and capable.

Everything fell apart for them after that.

Milan had nearly gone ahead a few minutes before when Thiago Silva had his shot from outside the area knocked away by a fully extended Antonio Rosati.

The Brazilian recovered and put the ball through the Lecce players caught in a scrum on the goal line in the 23rd.

Milan got Milanista all over the world in an uproar five minutes later as Pato knocked in his second of the match when he received a brilliant through ball from Ronaldinho which split the defense after which he skipped past the Rosati and passed the ball into an empty net.

The club went into halftime with a commanding 3-0 advantage.

As if Milan fans had not had enough to be excited about to that point, they were given a curtain call as Zlatan Ibrahimovic was unveiled to the fans at the half.

Much like we saw when Ronaldinho joined the club in 2008, Ibrahimovic had the red carpet rolled out as he made his walk to the center of the pitch where he was presented his numberless shirt.

During his address to the fans, he gave his reason for joining the club.

"I want to win everything."

If nothing more, a Scudetto could be possible this season, as Milan proved they absolutely mean business.

After the half, Milan continued to dominate possession, which they had 63 percent of the match.

Throughout the ground, Milan were dominant. Everyone seemed to click and the game just came naturally to a club which has been criticized all off-season as contenders for only a second, third or fourth position.

After the Lecce match, (even though Lecce are a promoted club) they have given Italy and the world an idea of their agenda for the season.

It must have been difficult for Allegri to make his changes. Everyone just seemed to be in top form, but three had to give way as Gennaro Gattuso, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Filippo Inzaghi all made their season debuts in the second half, replacing Pato, Massimo Ambrosini and Marco Borriello, who may have made his only start for a few matches with Ibrahimovic set to appear in Round 2.

The 37-year-old Inzaghi came on and set off as if he was 25 again, as he immediately went for another spectacular goal, only to see his masterful chip clink off the post.

He finally found the net in the 90th minute, a perfect ending to a perfect day in the Lombardy capital.

Everything went right for the Rossoneri. Passing was excellent throughout the field, as Milan created dangerous threats through lofted balls, through balls, possession worked up the entire field, and on set pieces. Nobody played horribly. Even players like Daniele Bonera, who found it hard to find time under Leonardo and was also injured a bit last year, played spectacular on defense.

Boateng impressed in his debut when he came in as a substitute for Pato. He had good touches and was visible on both sides of the ball, nearly creating a goal himself.

Milan will have nearly two weeks off for UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying.

The next match for the Devils will be September 12th against promoted side Cesena, who held Roma to a surprising 1-1 draw on Saturday.
