Impressions and Notes From The Hokies 2nd Scrimmage

Travis WilliamsAug 22, 2010

Virginia Tech's second scrimmage was held Saturday at Lane Stadium, giving players the another opportunity to impress fans and coaches before they kick-off the season against Boise St. on September 6.

Ryan Williams and David Wilson looked solid in the Hokies' backfield. Williams gained 46 yards and scored a 2 yard touchdown, while Wilson gained 36 yards on 6 carries, scoring a 12 yard touchdown. It should also be noted that Wilson has some incredible river dance skills, as he demonstrated in the pre-scrimmage warm ups.

Tyrod Taylor was steady under center, going 7-9 for 95 yards and scoring a 24 yard touchdown on a sharply throw ball to Dyrell Roberts.

Newly announced second stringer Logan Thomas went 6-16 through the air, but two of those were for touchdowns. One score was to tight end Eric Martin and the other was on beautifully thrown ball to Marcus Davis in the back of the endzone. Thomas also proved to have a little elusiveness, twice gaining significant yardage running the ball.

Defensively free safety Eddie Whitley led the way with 7 tackles, while Zach Luckett grabbed four of his own. Jacob Sykes had another good showing, breaking up two passes and Bruce Taylor, filling in for the injured Barquell Rivers, eased fans' minds yet again by intercepting Taylor late in the scrimmage.

If one wants to make a good impression on a Frank Beamer team, special teams is usually a good place to start and that's exactly what redshirt junior Chris Hill did Saturday. Hill blocked two punts, which ignited the fans and no doubt grabbed the attention of the staff.

Kicker Chris Hazley finally missed his first field goal of the preseason on a 48 yard attempt, but it was most likely due to kinks between him and holder Danny Coale. Coale was filling in for Brian Saunders who suffered a minor ankle injury earlier in the scrimmage. Hazley was 2-3, making good from 47 and 43 yards out.

Overall the Hokies got in another solid Saturday of work under head coach Frank Beamer, who had a pretty good day himself. Saturday Beamer agreed to a contract extension, keeping him in Blacksburg through 2016.
