How Fast Is Jaguar Frosh T.J. Glover? Defenses Rarely See His Face
T.J. Glover is fast.
Seriously. I'm not playing with you.
If you look up "fast" in the dictionary there'll likely be a picture of South Alabama's 5-9 Tampa (FL) freshman running back right next to the definition.
And even though the picture will probably be a blurry image, with a No. 24 barely visible on its back, trust me ... it's him.
"We're going to have to find ways to get him the ball," said Jaguars' Offensive Coordinator Greg Gregory.
"T.J. must touch the ball."
That's about as bad as news can get in one sentence for opposing defenses.
The 160-pound puff of air from Tampa's Plant High School showed off his wheels in a recent South Alabama scrimmage when he took a handoff and was immediately met by a wall of defenders.
Glover simply reversed field and you'd swear he threw on a red cape as he sailed 70-yards untouched down the sidelines.
"That dude is fast," said a defender who took all kinds of wrong angles in an attempt to head Glover off.
Jaguar running back Santuan McGee, another burner, has himself been timed in 4.35 for the 40.
Somewhow, though, Glover's 4.3 just looks faster.
It may be the way his legs mesh like an electric mixer when he runs.
It may be how quickly he gets seperation from defenders.
Or it may just simply be that he seems to be in two places at once.
But whatever it is, it's mind boggling.
Gregory says if Glover and fellow highly-touted freshman running back Johnny Lockett (Sweetwater AL) can just "run behind their pads they'll be ok." An obvious reference to the young duo learning how to run at the next level.
But running behind his pads may be hard for Glover to do. Especially if he runs slap out of them.
Glover, who had offers from Towson State, Georgia Southern and Western Michigan, had a big role for Plant last year as the much-heralded Panthers (Rivals.com's No. 1-rated high school team in the country this coming season) rung up their third straight Florida 5A state title.
He averaged 11.7 yards per carry, 17 yards a reception, 14 yards per punt return and nearly 16 yards per kick return. All while leading the team in touchdowns (18).
He now brings those gaudy numbers to South Alabama as head coach Joey Jones continues putting quality pieces in place in preparation for the program getting its first taste of Division I competition in 2011.
"We are approaching a D-I mentatlity right now," said a smiling Jones recently. "Our young players will need to develop quickly."
As the 2010 schedule approaches, Glover could be one of those players who brings a lot of smiles to USA fan's faces.
Especially if opposing defenses never get a look at his ...
