Better Late Than Never: Miami Hurricanes' Recruiting Class Gets Two Thumbs Up

Benny VargasJul 23, 2010

At the end of the recruiting process it seemed as though the Hurricanes had come away with a solid but not great group of commitments. Miami didn't have any of the Top 100 ranked players and seemed to have missed on a few high prized recruits.

Fast forward almost six months and now Randy Shannon has to have a big smile on his face. So should all 'Canes fans for that matter.

Thanks to the addition of five star prospects Latwan Anderson and Seantrel Henderson, Miami now has two of the most sought after players in the nation.

Anderson, who has incredible speed, decommited from West Virginia and elected to sign a Track and Field scholarship with Miami.

Ranked the 15th best overall prospect, he is a wide receiver/defensive back and special teams return man. Anderson has the ability to contribute on both offense and defense as a freshman. "I felt that all things were equal between West Virginia and Miami, the only difference was the football. In my opinion, Miami is far and away closer to winning conference and national championships than West Virginia."

The biggest addition, both literally and figuratively, has to be Seantrel Henderson.

After having committed to play at USC, Henderson was released from his letter of intent by the Trojans. Seantrel didn't want to stick around on a team that had just been penalized by the NCAA, reducing their scholarships and preventing them from playing in Bowl Games for the next couple of seasons.

"I didn't want to walk into a situation like that when I still had a chance to go somewhere else where everything was all good," Seantrel Henderson said.

Seantrel, who is 6'8" 350 lbs, is a monster of a young man. The Hurricanes jumped in late in the recruiting process for him because they originally believed they didn't have a shot to land the highly coveted prospect.

During their time courting him Seantrel was so impressed with Miami and Coach Randy Shannon that he almost signed with them first. His father was quoted as saying had Miami jumped in sooner we would have probably gone with them.

In Henderson, Miami landed Rivals' number one ranked recruit and a much needed stud for the offensive line. He will be allowed to compete for a starting offensive tackle job immediately. Henderson stated that "When I get there, I just have to workout and go as hard as (other players) have been going since they got there. I’ve been active everyday, but at the same time, it’s not like what the players are doing that are already down there.”

The additions of Anderson adn Henderson gave a boost to a recruiting class that was ranked 16th in the nation. With these two on board Miami's recruiting class probably ends up as one of the top ten in college.

They will join a group that already includes running back Storm Johnson, a player that others in the program have been raving about, and offensive lineman Brandon Linder, who along with Henderson, is expected to come in and compete for a starting spot right away.

The surprise late additions bolster the Canes' chances of fielding an elite team. Miami already had high expectations for this up coming season but now they are poised to add a few game changers into the mix.

Randy Shannon now needs to find a way to convert all the talent he has assembled into a potential title contender.
