SEC Media Days 2010: Alabama's Marcell Dareus Ineligible, Nick Saban Hot

Joel BarkerJul 21, 2010

Hoover, AL—If I’ve heard it once, I’ve heard it a million times.

“SEC Media Days is anything but dull.”

“It’s a circus” some say.

After one day at the Wynfrey Hotel, I couldn't agree more.

The 100-plus Crimson-clad ‘Bama fans in the lobby, in unison giving a big "ROOOOLLLLL TIDE" as Nick Saban walked in the door, was my official welcome to SEC Media days moment.

Later, Saban would give his own shoutout. His was aimed at rogue agents or “pimps” as he compared them, in his first media address since Marcell Dareus was reportedly declared ineligible.

Today, Nick Saban was a coach, a rock star, and a disgusted father rolled into one. Nick Saban is on the warpath.

Who can blame him?

Saban said, "I don't think it's anything but greed that is creating it right now on behalf of the agents. Agents that do this, I hate to say this, but how are they any better than a pimp?"

Those are pretty strong words from the nation's top coach.

He didn't stop there, however. "I have no respect for people who do that to young people, none. I mean, none. How would you feel if they did it to your child?" Saban said.

Sure, the athletes are ultimately responsible for accepting gifts, money, trips, or whatever else these sleazy agents are offering these days, but to have no repercussions for the agents themselves is completely absurd.

Saban was quick to point out that there's still some good agents, "not out there chasing guys and giving them money and breaking rules and flying them all over the country, sending girls after them, all kind of stuff."

Let’s get one thing straight right now. For the haters who are emitting their annual cat-call’s directed toward Alabama and their “cheating” past, this particular investigation has nothing to do with Saban or Alabama at this point.

I know college football fans can be venomous, but it has been reported that up to 40 different players could be involved in this latest agent scandal.

During the final moments of Day One at SEC Media Days, it was revealed that Georgia had received notification from the NCAA regarding "Agent-Gate."

It has affected North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. So far, Tide Defensive Lineman, Marcell Dareus is the only one of the group to be declared ineligible—a ruling that Alabama has reportedly stated it will appeal.

One has to wonder, is Nick Saban the guy you want to get riled up? He is, after all, the top coach in America right now. He did coach in the NFL, so I'm sure he has at least some connections that could conceivably get something done to rectify this situation.

If anyone can grandstand and use his platform to create change in the way rogue agents are handled, it’s Nick Saban.

Whether you wear orange, crimson, or your favorite cheer contains the words, “War Eagle,” for the good of college football, let’s hope he does just that.
