Cincinnati Football: 2010 Sugar Bowl Champs?

Alex CallosJul 20, 2010

When news broke yesterday of the recent NCAA probe into the University of Florida, I couldn't help but smile.

Former Florida Gator center Maurkice Pouncey allegedly received $100,000 from an agent after the SEC Championship game against Alabama and before the Sugar Bowl in January.

If allegations turn up true, Florida will be forced to vacate their Sugar Bowl victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats.

From the looks of things, that is going to be the only victory taken away from Urban Meyer and the beloved Gators of the SEC.

While I have no way of telling if Pouncey was given the $100,000 he was accused of accepting. If the story does turn up true, it will certainly call for further investigation into not only Pouncey, but the rest of the Florida program.

If he took money before the Sugar Bowl, what's to say he didn't take money earlier in the year? But, then again, what's to say he did?

While most people realize Florida is not the only school giving improper benefits to their players, the fact is they were dumb enough to get caught and now have some explaining to do.

While it is a strong possibility the Gators will have to give away their Sugar Bowl victory over Cincinnati, what does it even mean?

It doesn't take away the beating the Gators handed the Bearcats and it obviously doesn't make Cincinnati a better team. It certainly doesn't help alleviate the 'Gator' and 'SEC' chants I still hear ringing in my head from being at the game.

What kind of team chants for their conference? I still don't get it.

The one thing this investigation does do is bring a cloud of suspicion over the entire Florida program. And that puts a big smile on my face.

This may help explain the recent success of the Florida program.

Maybe the Gators have been cheating all along? What if further investigation into Pouncey calls for further investigation into the Florida program and perhaps the entire SEC as a whole?

There has to be an explanation as to why every superstar athlete at the high school level wants to play in the SEC, right?

Maybe the truth will all come out beginning with Maurkice Pouncey.

I know this is wishful thinking, but who wouldn't love to see Florida and the SEC crumble?

One thing is certain though, I will not have a hard time saying the Cincinnati Bearcats are the 2010 Sugar Bowl Champs.

How does it feel now, Florida?
