Manchester United Kick Off World Tour with Victory over Celtic

United started the new season with a hard-fought victory over Celtic in Toronto yesterday. Goals from Berbatov, Welbeck, and Cleverly ensure United gave their Northern American fams something to cheer about.

Georgios Samaras netted the one goal for Celtic after Berbatov opened the scoring. Ferguson started with a somewhat balanced lineup of bright young talent infused with a mixture of regular experienced lads.

United starting 11:

Van der Sar, Rafeal da Silva, Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans, Fabio da Silva, Darren Fletcher (C), Paul Scholes, Gabriel Obertan, Ryan Giggs, Mame Biram Diouf, Dimitar Berbatov.

Around 40,000 spectators packed the stadium. United players were tested in the humid conditions; despite that, they came out with great enthusiasm and energy looking to kick-start the season on a high.

Dimitar Berbatov impressed many with his skillful ability and neat finish, and seems to be ready to challenge for the front row spot.

In the second half, Fergie gave Wes Brown, John O’Shea, Tom Cleverley, and Darron Gibson game time, with Gibson having an opportunity early in the half but failing to capitalise.

Looking at the new signing, Chris Smalling had a more frustrating game after bring down Joe Ledley in the area in the first half which gave the opposition a penalty which they duly slotted in.

Other players who also got a run-in were Fredrico Macheda, whose agent said he won't be going out on loan this season; Danny Welbeck, and Richie Da Laet, brought on in the 63rd minute.

United will now focus on their next match, which will be played in the US. Philadelphia Union is the opposition.
