What Can Be Expected From LeBron James and the New Miami Heat Team?
We all remember the classic moment in "Return of the Jedi" as the Millennium Falcon exits the Death-Star in a swirl of fire seconds before the battle station explodes into oblivion.
And after Dan Gilbert's recent comments....I seem to think that LeBron just escaped a Death-Star of his own.
Last Thursday, LeBron James announced that he would be leaving Cleveland to join Dwyane Wade and Chris bosh in Miami.
After the announcement, the Cav's owner, Dan Gilbert, Literally exploded. He called the situation, "Narcissistic", "Self-Promotional", and "Disappointing". He went on to call LeBron: "Disloyal", and a "Traitor", he also accused him of quitting in the playoffs.
Now, whether the comments and accuasations were true or not, they were still completely child-like and unnecessary. It reminded me of a two-year old throwing a tantrum. The way Dan reacted gives LeBron a real view of the disaster he just escaped. Dan Gilbert went on to say:
"I personally guarantee that the Cleveland Cavaliers will win an NBA Championship before the self-titled 'King' wins one."
Famous last words....haha... Alright Dan, We'll see.
Well anyway, now that proffessional basketball in Cleveland just got destroyed, we can look at Miami.
Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, and Chris Bosh. All on the same team. It's unbelievable; too good to be true. It's like Pat Riley just plugged in the Gameshark and typed in the "Win Championship" cheat-code.
So the question is: What does the new Miami Heat team create besides an unstoppable NBA 2K11 team?
Mismatches. Teams would have to start worrying about three impact players instead of the usual one or two. That leaves a mismatch no matter what style of defense you're running. Also the pick and rolls would be literally insane and unstoppable; and if you add the give and go's in there....
I just passed out.
The new Miami Heat team has the potential to send the NBA into a dark age that would last 6-7 years. Scary thought. But it is really up to the NBA now. LeBron made his move, now the NBA must react. Pat Riley has managed to get Wade, James, and Bosh onto the Heat... but what about the rest of the team? They still need more solid players.
The Lakers will be looking for another star as well. The Magic,Jazz,Celtics, and Nuggets all need to tweak their rosters to be able to compete. The Knicks got Amare and the Bulls got Boozer, but there has to be bigger changes than that to be able to play with the big boys.
So now we see players like Allen Iverson and Tracy McGrady getting alot of attention. Solid players are in high demand. The teams all need to start constructing their own powerhouses from current free-agents and solid veterans in order to compete with the new Heat team. If they don't, then they might as well take the season off.
If you are a Miami Heat fan, all of this panic and chaos is extremely good. People fear what the Heat have. However, the words of Bill Simmons are ringing in the back of my head:
"I can't imagine him (LeBron) signing with Miami because Dwyane Wade is almost too good. LeBron wants help, but he doesn't want to be perceived has riding someone else's coattails, either. Wade might be, the best player alive for all we know."
And that's the other thing. Bill Simmons has a great point. LeBron also mentioned that Dwyane Wade is the "unselfish one" in the situation. That could turn into a problem. If LeBron thinks that D-Wade is just going to transform into another mannequin that just feeds the ball to him, then he is in for a ride. As Bill said, Dwyane Wade "might be, the best player alive for all we know."
And I agree. If the Heat win a championship, everyone will know that it was Dwyane Wade just as much, if not more than it was LeBron. And since Wade has already won a ring in Miami, LeBron will always be a step behind. Always.
And what if Wade averages more points than LeBron? What if Wade does better? This would all cause trouble, and asking a player like Wade to tone down his playing style for someone else is simply unacceptable.
So if the Heat can ALL play unselfishly, then we can assume that they will win the finals. If they can't, then we can expect them to go downhill. Either way, the Heat are Wade's team....Now it's up to LeBron to decide if he is okay with that or not. So what's it going to be LeBron? A championship? or Personal Glory?
His decision will decide the future of NBA Basketball.
