Mariners' Gabe Speier Suspended for Throwing at Tigers' Gleyber Torres on Video After Raleigh HBP

Seattle Mariners reliever Gabe Speier has been suspended by MLB for intentionally throwing at Gleyber Torres of the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night.

MLB announced Speier has been suspended for three games and was fined an undisclosed amount for hitting Torres with a pitch in the eighth inning of Seattle's 4-2 win.

Speier, who is appealing the decision, hit Torres in the leg with a fastball after Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh was hit by a pitch from Tigers reliever Enmanuel De Jesus in the bottom of the seventh.

The situation after Speier's hit by pitch resulted in both benches and bullpens clearing, though there was no physical altercation.

Once the umpires got the situation calmed down, Speier was ejected by first base umpire Mark Wenger. Mariners manager Dan Wilson came out of the dugout to protest the decision, leading to him getting tossed.

Wilson received a one-game suspension that he will serve on Thursday during the final game of the series between the two teams.

"I guess they protected Raleigh," Torres said after the game. "I don't think we hit Raleigh on purpose. But that's baseball. That's their guy and I know they try to protect him."

Even though the Raleigh and Torres hit by pitches received most of the attention, the two pitching staffs combined for a total of five hit by pitches in the game with four being Tigers.

Max Clark, Riley Greene and Zack McKinstry were the other Tigers hit with a pitch. Greene and McKinstry were hit on the back foot with breaking balls. Clark was awarded first base after replay.

Torres being hit by a pitch wound up working to Detroit's advantage because Dillon Dingler homered off Mariners reliever Eduard Bazardo to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Mariners wound up getting a run back in the bottom of the eighth on Colt Emerson's solo homer en route to a 4-2 victory.
