Cesc Fabregas's Dilemma: Why David Villa Has Bought Arsenal More Time.

Colby NewquistJul 1, 2010

Every morning, the sun will rise, and every night, the sun will set. For every first breath taken, in a last breath, is let out. Some things in life are just certain.

And one thing that is certain is that Cesc Fabregas, Arsenal’s captain, lead-assister, lead-goal scorer, talisman, engine, and just about everything else, will always be reportedly leaving Arsenal for Barcelona.

In truth, one day, Fabregas will be back at Barcelona; but for now, the speculation is simply hearsay.

The speculation comes about every summer, every January transfer window, and anytime anyone in England mentions Barcelona.

Despite Fabregas constantly reminding the world that his loyalties lie with Arsenal, the world knows he will one day end up back in Barcelona.

The fuel for the speculation has been a combination of Barcelona's adamant and public pursuit of Fabregas and Arsenal's inability to win a trophy in five years. Fabregas, like all great players, wants to win. A true world-class player has trophies attached to his name. Arsenal have not been able to provide Fabregas with enough consistent talent to stockpile his trophy cabinet.

Barcelona, on the other hand, is a team on top of the world. Barcelona currently has the world's best player, Lionel Messi (according to FIFA). The team won six trophies last year alone; every tournament Barcelona entered into they won a feat that no team has accomplished.

Apart from Barcelona's impressive success, they play a style of soccer Fabregas was literally born and bred in. Fabregas was part of the youth system at Barcelona--another luring quality for Fabregas. Even when Fabregas left Barcelona, he went to Arsenal, a team notorious for playing attractive, quick, simple soccer very similar to Barcelona.

Despite Fabregas's head and determination being with Arsenal, his heart is, and will always be, with Barcelona. So it is no wonder Barcelona is eager to call their prodigal son back home.

Nonetheless, Barcelona signing David Villa may have been just what Arsenal needed to hold on to Fabregas, for now.

Fabregas, being a world-class player, wants to not only win, but to play. Barcelona has many world class players. In fact, Barcelona has not only the FIFA World Player of the Year, but they have one of the most solid and deadly attacking combinations resting in their midfield.

Xavi (Barelona's center midfield conductor) is arguably in the best form of his life. Great news for Barcelona. Bad news for Fabregas.

Xavi and Fabregas play a similar role. With Xavi’s experience with Barcelona and his top form, it would be hard to knock him out of his starting spot.

Furthermore, it would be hard for Fabregas to break apart Xavi and his partner through the middle, Iniesta. Xavi and Iniesta share a bond that goes beyond individual skill; on the field, they share one mind.

By Barcelona adding David Villa to their team they have left little room for Fabregas to wiggle his way on to the field. Do not believe me? Look at Spain.

Since his first cap in 2006, Fabregas has only started 28 games. Twelve of those starts being in international friendlies. In other words, when it came to the big games, Fabregas found himself watching from the sidelines.

Barcelona and Spain share seven players, including Xavi, Iniesta, and David Villa. The correlations between Spain and Barcelona are strong. The signs are there that Barcelona, right now, can be another Spain for Fabregas and he can spend his next few seasons as a super-sub or a player to offer a rest.

Taking a gamble and watching from the sideline and waiting for a turn may be okay with Fabregas. My money says he is a player who wants to be in the thick of the action and may grow impatient on a Barcelona bench.

Barcelona will always be knocking on Fabregas’s door. He should answer the call when Barcelona need Fabregas, not when they want him.

Fabregas should not be tempted by the lustrous Barcelona just yet. His time is coming. For now, Arsenal should do all they can to benefit from their inevitably-departed captain and Fabregas should continue to play and grow as much as possible at Arsenal.

After all he is only 22.
