Arsenal Transfer Prospect: What Should Happen with Unwanted Arsenal Trio?

Callum D'SouzaJun 28, 2010

With the summer transfer window up and running, managers are eagerly awaiting and searching to sell and buy players. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has a tough job ahead of him after finishing a fifth successive season without managing to secure any silverware.

The Frenchman has reassured fans by insisting he will buy and sell players. Fans are desperate for a new goalkeeper after the Gunners' current keeping pair Lukasz Fabianski and Manuel Almunia failed to make sufficient impacts whilst at the helm. The pair have a tendency to make serious errors in vital situations, costing the North London side dearly.

Fans are also hoping to see defensive reinforcements secured to ensure a stronger, reliable, more consistent back four. Many feel Wenger lacks one more quality centre back as well as capable depth in his squad.

However, Wenger's current main focus point will be to deal with his out-of-contract players as well as players who are struggling. The likes of William Gallas, Eduardo Da Silva, and Sol Campbell are all under a transfer cloud. Thus raising the question, what should be done about them?

Eduardo Da Silva

After the Croatian suffered a horror injury in February 2008, the striker has failed to revitalize his career. Eduardo, who was left with a broken fibula and dislocated ankle, has struggled since returning to fitness and manager Arsene Wenger feels he would be better suited to try his trade elsewhere.

At a dominant club like Arsenal, they need fully fit, performing strikers. Eduardo would be better fitted to perform in a less physical and tenacious league, unlike the English one. Rumours have it that Wenger has held talks with the former Dinamo Zagreb sharpshooter and discussed the prospects of his future.

William Gallas

The former Arsenal captain enjoyed a solid season last campaign before injury intervened. The French defender struck up an impressive season with new boy Thomas Vermaelen and also recaptured the form that saw him succeed at Chelsea.

However, at 32 Gallas is exiting his prime, and having unsuccessfully reached an agreement over his future with Wenger, it is almost certain the French international will depart the Emirates on a free transfer.

But is Wenger being too rash? Keeping Gallas for a further two seasons to ensure he sees out his season in North London will keep the former Chelsea defender's mind at bay and enable him to really concentrate on his football.

Despite it being no secret that many players dislike the Frenchman, he would be a suitable mentor to the younger players and would also ensure depth for when the usual injury bug destroys Arsenal.

Sol Campbell

After rejoining Arsenal after a four-year absence, Sol Campell returned to the status he once owned. The 35-year-old re-signed with Arsenal during the January transfer window last season after impressing Wenger in various training session.

This cast doubts over many fans' and critics' minds, but Campbell ensured they were baked some humble pie with a number of impressive efforts that had him in contention for a spot in England's World Cup side.

Now the English veteran is off contracts, and rumours have it Scottish giants Celtic are eager to have Campell on their roster. Keeping the former Portsmouth captain at the Gunners, however, would see added depth and leadership implemented in the Arsenal defensive.

Similar to Gallas, Campbell would be a much needed mentor to the younger players as well as providing experience.

Time will tell what will occur for this unlikely trio.
