Top Player In Oklahoma Pledges To the Texas Longhorns: Welcome Josh Turner

Dan TreadwayJun 19, 2010

The poaching of some of the top talent in Texas has historically been common practice by the University of Oklahoma.

That Texas has now secured a commitment from one of the top players in Oklahoma for the second year in a row can only be described as poetic justice.

On Saturday, several sources confirmed that Oklahoma-native Josh Turner became the 21st commitment in the Texas Longhorns' 2011 recruiting class. Turner follows in the footsteps of Tulsa Central High School athlete Demarco Cobbs, who committed to the Longhorns in the 2010 class.

Turner is a four-star recruit according to Rivals.com and the second highest rated cornerback prospect in the nation. He's also a member of the ESPN 150 rankings.

As you can see from his film, Turner is a tremendous athlete with outstanding game speed. With much of the experienced Texas' secondary nearing graduation, there's a good chance Turner will receive early playing time.

Beyond his football talents, according to Rivals.com, Turner possesses a 3.97 GPA and has ambitions to become a doctor. By all indications, he will be a valuable addition to the University of Texas both as a student and an athlete.

Turner had offers from more or less every prominent football program in the country, and ultimately chose Texas over his other favorites: Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Miami.

Turner and Arizona-based OL Christian Westerman mark two great out of state pick-ups for the Longhorns in this class—an area which they have struggled with in past classes.

There's a strong chance that Turner's commitment will mean that Longhorns will not recruit anymore players that play in the secondary in this class.

There still is a chance they aren't done at the position however.

In recent weeks the stock of Charles Jackson, a corner back prospect from Klein, Texas, has been soaring. There are rumblings that the Longhorns may pursue him, but given the limited numbers left in this class, the more likely scenario is that OU will pay back the favor by securing a commitment from the coveted Texas-based ball hawk.

Texas also recently extended an offer to cornerback David Jenkins out of Carrolton, Texas. It will now be interesting to see how Turner's commitment will affect the approach Texas takes towards Jenkins' recruitment.

Turner was one of the top players left on the radar for what is already a very stellar Texas class. His commitment likely ensures that Texas will continue to have one of the best secondaries in the country for years to come.
