World Cup 2010: Many Shocks In First Round Of Group Games

Daniel GoochJun 16, 2010

Every team has played their opening games of this year's World Cup finals, and there has already been a number of shocks.

Overall, the first round of games have been quite disappointing. Out of the first 16 games played, 7 of them have been draws, with 5 other games being 1-0.

One the first day of the tournament, South Africa held Mexico to a 1-1 draw, while Uruguay did the same to France in a goalless draw.

It was on the second day where a big surprise happened. Euro 2004 winners Greece were beaten 2-0 by the South Koreans.

Later on that day, was the forgettable match between England and USA, there that blunder by Green cost the Three Lions all three points.

The Germany-Australia game was what what we expected of it. A 4-0 win for the Germans.

Italy then stumbled against Paraguay. The current World champions could only manage a 1-1 draw.

New Zealand are the ultimate underdogs that everyone is rooting for. In their first game against Slovakia they got their first ever point in the World Cup finals thanks to a last-minute goal in the 92nd minute by Winston Reid.

Yet another draw between the Ivory Coast and Portugal, meant that Brazil went atop of group G aka the "group of death."

North Korea, the fourth team in the group of death, gave Brazil a scare scoring their first goal in the World Cup since 1966.

The last game of the first round brought the biggest upset. Spain, one of the favourites to win the tournament, lost by a single goal to Switzerland.
