How To Rebuild The Big XII Conference
It seems the Big XII conference will stay around after all despite the loss of Colorado and Nebraska. So we have the Big XII with 10 teams, the Pac-10 has 11 and the Big Ten has 12. These are supposedly institutions of higher learning yet they can’t seem to count. I’m glad the Big XII is still alive and a viable major conference in college athletics but they need to get back to 12 teams. Here’s my plan to redesign the Big XII:
The Big XII simply needs to add two teams to get back to 12 and be able to keep the conference championship game and two divisions. These need to be teams that will be able to compete in football and basketball and generate revenue for the conference. Adding two teams isn’t where I’d end the reconstitution of the Big XII. I’d drop Baylor. Baylor simply has never been competitive in football and creates the least amount of revenue for the conference.
We’re now down to nine teams in the Big XII but let’s add Texas Christian University, the University of Memphis and the University of Houston. TCU played in the BCS last year and is becoming a powerful football program. Memphis brings $10 million a year from FedEx in sponsorship money. Houston brings a huge market which will just attract more viewers to the Big XII and is an improving football program.
Now the Big XII is back up to capacity and can hold a conference championship game. It’s time to realign the divisions of the Big XII though.
The Big XII North Division:
Iowa State
Kansas
Kansas State
Memphis
Missouri
Oklahoma State
The Big XII South Division:
Houston
Oklahoma
TCU
Texas
Texas A & M
Texas Tech
These moves make the Big XII stronger in football and basketball, the sports that matter. The sports that generate the revenue so the rest of the sports can exist. Dan Beebe, you’ve got a mess on your hands but hopefully you can follow my plan and make the Big XII even better!
