Decision Time: Texas A&M Is on the Clock With the SEC, Pac-10

Todd KaufmannJun 11, 2010

Texas A&M, has a decision to make and that decision is going to affect not only the conference they will be leaving (Big 12) but also the SEC and Pac-10 who are waiting on the Aggie's decision.

They hold the cards at this moment but the Pac-10 wants an answer and they want one soon.

As I listened to the radio this afternoon on my way home, the Aggies were the topic of conversation and everyone had an opinion. Not surprising seeing as I live in North Texas and the town is full of Aggie, Longhorn, Sooner, and Red Raider fans.

Texas fans were pissed because little brother was getting ready to punch big brother in the mouth by going off on their own. Aggie fans laughed at the pissed Texas fans and called them cowards for joining a lesser conference instead of going with them to the SEC.

Of course, that started a firestorm of emails and fan texts to this local station here in Dallas and most were probably unreadable.

But here's where it gets interesting. Texas A&M is actually making a pretty smart move in my own humble opinion.

Sure, big brother wants little brother to keep hanging around in their shadow, but little brother has had enough of being pushed around and is close to deciding that they can fend for themselves without big brother's help.

Texas A&M heading to the SEC is going to be a tough move for awhile and I don't believe the Aggies will be able to compete with the likes of Florida, Alabama, LSU, Tennessee, and the like—for now.

What the Aggies will be able to do is possibly take recruits away from Texas and Oklahoma by telling them that they can stay close to home and still play in arguably the best conference in college football. If you were a high school recruit, wouldn't that be enough for you to jump ship to Texas A&M instead of playing for Texas in the Pac-16?

So, what decision do the Aggies come to?

There's no question in my mind that the Aggies are on their way to the SEC and it's a move that will end up paying off in the long run.

Of course, Texas has already threatened the Aggies by telling them that they will no longer play any competitive games against them in any sport. Texas is also trying to get exactly what they want from the new Pac-16 by not playing Oregon and Oregon State but every seven or eight years. Not sure how much water that rumor holds but that was also discussed on this North Texas radio station earlier Friday afternoon.

In the end, Texas A&M holds all the cards at this moment. The SEC wants them, Texas A&M wants the SEC, and I don't see any reason for this not to happen.

Sorry Texas fans, little brother isn't going to be around for you to beat up any longer.

How do you like them apples?
