Texas Football: Move To SEC Would Be Horrible for NCAA Football
Texas is on the move and may be joining the SEC as its new home. This would be a horrible move not only for Texas, but also for college football as a whole.
Texas is one of the biggest football programs in the nation. They usually make it to at least a bowl game if not a championship game, and usually have a decently winning season.
As they are positioned now, they can competitively play against other southern schools and other colleges across the nation. If Texas was to join the SEC they would lose several of their biggest championship competitors, like Alabama, and would be forced to play mostly schools within the SEC.
This loss of competition for Texas would be a devastation to college football.
Here's why.
If Texas were to join the SEC, which is home to big teams like Florida and Alabama, they would lose these teams as possible championship competitors because they are in the same division.
This would be a terrible loss for football fans because these teams are all from the south and are pretty evenly matched, making their football games exciting and worth watching.
Only being able to play these teams during the regular season would hurt all of college football, because it would take away possible exciting and evenly matched games in the championship.
If Texas joins the SEC, it will make the conferences lopsided.
How?
Putting yet another big name football program like Texas in the SEC would make the SEC quite possibly the strongest NCAA conference in all of college football.
This would be unfair to the other conferences like the Big Ten and PAC-10, because all of the strong schools from the south are now in a league together and the other conference-teams may not get as many chances to play against these teams.
This may also ensure that in every championship there is an SEC team playing, which would be unfair to the other conferences’ teams. Big Ten and PAC-10 teams may have less opportunity to make it to a championship game.
If Texas joins the SEC, not only will they lose valuable championship competitors, they may also lose the opportunity to play in a championship game.
The other schools in the SEC like Alabama, Arkansas and Florida are all very strong teams. Texas may struggle against these teams, which could hurt its chances at playing for a national championship.
This would be a sober day for Texas, and a loss for all of college football, because Texas is a great competitor and in some years deserves to play in the championship game.
So what should Texas do?
Instead of joining the SEC, Texas should think about joining the Big Ten instead.
They are already pretty evenly matched with the other teams in program size and talent. This option not only keeps the football conferences balanced, but it keeps competition options open for Texas as well.
With this solution, Texas could still see two of their biggest rivals, Alabama and Florida, in a championship game. They would also be able to play against other competitive teams from the north as well.
It would not only be a better move, but a better fit for Texas if they were to join the Big Ten instead of the SEC.
One thing is for certain, if Texas does chose to join the SEC, it will be a sad day in college football.
