Breaking News, Texas Longhorns To the Big Ten: Jim Delaney's New Date
It's reported today from a Kansas City news station that Texas may be going to the Big Ten rather than becoming part of the supposed PAC-10 expansion as previously expected.
KCTV5 is reporting that, according to high level sources, Texas and Texas A&M have both already spoken with the Big Ten about a spot within their ever expanding and continuously talked about conference. On top of this, they won't need to bring Texas Tech or Baylor along with them in the move.
What at first looked like a simple, predictable, expansion with the majority of the Big 12 being swallowed up by the PAC-10 while Missouri and Nebraska moved towards the Big 10 is now beginning to change.
It seems as though in the end this whole ordeal is looking more like a fraternity rush than a business deal, and most of us won't know the outcome until bid acceptance day.
However, perhaps the most important factor in all of this is Big 10 commissioner Jim Delaney.
At first glance it seemed as though Delaney was putting all of his eggs into one basket with Notre Dame. A basket who's bottom had fallen out nearly a decade ago in the late 90's when the Irish showed no interest in his conference.
Until recently, it looked like the same was about to occur and in a fight for Notre Dame, Delaney would instead receive a Nebraska and Missouri. Although those schools would be nice to grab, you can't exactly add two colleges together in order to equal the one that got away.
Now, it seems as though his savior from down south has arrived. With Texas, Delaney not only gets the money, fame, and outstanding fan base he would with Notre Dame, but he also receives a football program headed in a much better direction in the very near future.
Although it would be fantastic to say the recently criticized commissioner orchestrated it this way, it would also be realistic to say that it's highly unlikely.
But Delaney doesn't have to be smarter than we all thought in order to lock in what is apparently the best prospect in this year's rush class. He just has to be not dumb enough to deny them a bid.
Delaney should realize in the very near future that sometimes, it's not the one that got away who matters. It's the one you let go who makes all the difference.
Expect him to do that with the one way relationship that has been between his conference and the independent Notre Dame.
The analogy used over and over to describe the courtship between the Irish and the Big Ten is that Notre Dame has turned them down like a bad date to the prom.
Well, if the best way to get over someone is to find someone new, Delaney and the Big Ten may have just landed the hottest girl in school.
